[Newbie] To pick tank or not ?

machatzi83machatzi83 Member Posts: 1 Arc User
hi ,

Downloaded This game yesterday and i 'm not sure which class to pick.
I was thinking to pick a tankish class, but from what i read so far in some random posts i found is that Guardian Fighter is the tankish class.. but it seems like is not really needed in dungeon.

Those posts are a bit too old (6 months +).. so i don't know if things have changed and actually made GF really useful in dungeons.

Can someone tell me where GF stands right now? If GF is not so good for dungeons.. then which class do you recommend me to pick? Which class would you like to have in your party when going in dungeon?

Thanks!

Oathbound paladin is one of the overpowered classes and protection path is better for tankiness in my opinion.

ps: Im suprised people still download this game despite all the bad criticism in media...

GFs can tank in any epic dungeon, but not at the same rating as OPs.

OPs are superior face tankers, and can pull multiple mobs at BiS iLvLs, and usually do not require a DC in the party.
GFs are positional tankers (due to the nature of guard with the GF), and with the right kind of party (DC and control based dps) or build (Steel Defense), can run any content.

OPs have more natural aggro generation with class design (500% threat).
GFs have maximum forced aggro with taunt tab, but all other threat generation would always be less than an OP in the same party (even with all feat and power points put in, which is a waste).

OPs usually can tank epic dungeons at lower iLvLs than GFs (assuming builds are logical).
GFs work in harmony with OPs in the same party to generate massive party buffs, more like an amplifier than a tank.

However, both OP and GF are wanted in dungeon runs. It all depends on what you like to play as...

I got a straight bulwark OP. He doesn't do much damage, but he can take a massive beating.
If you couple that with a good DC, it's going to be smooth sailing for most parties in dungeons.

But doing solo quests, or anything solo, pretty much sucks. Mainly because it takes forever to kill mobs.

OP, I'd recommend playing a protection paladin. You can tank for a team, you can solo, and you're never without a source of healing. The only disadvantage OPs have when compared to GFs is that GFs can attack while blocking, while OPs cannot. Still, once you get the timing down, and learn to anticipate enemy attacks and position yourself well, that shortcoming is easily overcome. It's also easy to switch between defensive team-oriented tank, mixed team buffing tank, and solo dps modes, depending upon skills chosen/slotted and play style.
