Alignment-Based Query: Which One?

Ok, for those of you who don't know, this is based upon the D&D 'Alignment' system.

Also, I want to say I have only been able to read the Player's And Dungeon Master's Manuals from 3.5 Edition. I have not had the chance to play the PnP game, however. Therefore, I believe I have some knowledge on this, but without actual game-play experience, I am unsure how much I really understand.

Ok, with that out of the way, I want you to hear about my long-time 'Avatar', Piff.

I've used the name 'Piff' for years now. Truthfully, I don't even remember when I started using that name, but I know I've been using it for at least as long since Pokemon Silver for the Gameboy Color came out (since I remember using that name). Over the years, the name 'Piff' has been applied to countless personas: A Night Elf Druid in WoW, a Berserker in AQWorlds (for those of you who know what that is), Zombie-Apocalypse Survivors, Adventurers of all sorts, and even Online Shooters carried the name 'Piff'. However, I feel that one description serves what I believe to be 'Piff'.

Piff is a character based on Mediation. If there is a problem, he wants to solve it, and hopefully make both parties as content as possible. However, he knows that one must sometimes 'break the rules' to right what has been made 'wrong', if need be. The biggest character flaw, I suppose, is his overly-trusting nature, where he will be open to help someone whether or not it is obviously a trap.

I like the Drow Race, in it's own way. My concept for the character 'Piff' has to do with a sort of 'Redemption', but without any actual past wrongdoing. As many races dislike/distrust the Drow, in a way this fits; the Racial Distrust is something Piff feels compelled to change people's opinions about. Piff wants to show that he can be Good, and that he can be someone who is trustworthy, and memorable.

Piff also has somewhat of an 'ulterior motive'. He believes that the most important people are those who are remembered. Therefore, he does what he does not only to help others, and for the sake of doing what is 'good', but also to try and make people remember him, and so he can make his own mark on history. This can often backfire, because he could sometimes make actions based on 'Fame', when they in fact grant him 'Infamy'.

One of my Favorite Character Classes of all time has to be the Druid. Their powers, their philosophy, their personas; I love every part of the Druid. The protection of nature is key to Piff's being, and helps fuel him in what he does. He sometimes justifies his deeds by saying it is 'in the name of Nature's Love', even though we know it is not always so. His desire to please everyone (based upon his willingness to help/how he likes to make both sides of an argument content) is also shown in his Animal Companions; he feels connected to his 'companions' and almost relies on them for comfort. Piff is a 'social creature' and does not behave well when left alone.

My biggest question is this: What would you say would be Piff's Alignment? I think it is more like 'Neutral Good', since he doesn't adhere to strict rules, nor does he completely work without them. I feel like he is 'Good' in nature, but this is also debatable on my own part. Since he has his 'ulterior motive', could he be considered 'True Neutral'?

I would like to hear you opinions on that matter. I would also like to hear any Constructed Criticism you may have (oh god, I might have just dug my own grave...).

Anyway, thank you for reading my whole post. Really, I wrote this because of pure boredom, and since the Servers are down right now.
It makes sense, if you don't think about it.

Since you did specify that you were referencing the 3.5 rule-set I would have to say that based on your description Piff would be either Neutral Good or Chaotic Good. You mention that He wants to be good, and doesn't mind breaking the rules if necessary. The mediation part might lend itself to the Neutral aspect, but the choice between chaotic and neutral would really be more of an class decision, since there is very little difference in practice between the two.

(If you were asking about oD&D [BECMI or White Box] the alignment would most likely be Neutral - since that alignment system was Lawful, Neutral or Chaotic no good vs evil. IN D&D 4e the alignment would just be Good [in 4e the alignments are Lawful Good, Good, Unaligned, Evil and Chaotic Evil.]
