That's the weird part, i was just looking for groups and it was really fast between me sending the messages and get silenced... so i don't think it was some mass report, only if the reports "stack" every day.

I usually hit "report spam" if people post the same line several times in rapid succession. It is unnecessary and if everyone did it, the chat would be even harder to follow. Disliked it in other games and am happy that something can be done about it here.
Since this also puts you on people's ignore list, you were almost certainly reported by a number of players.

You just go into preferences and click 'Yes' to 'Show Account Names'. So when someone says something in zone, I would see, using you as an example, FacePalmingGoofBall@Alluhiakbar.

Yup, I keep full names on all the time by default. I know more people by their @handle then by their character name. Its just easier.
As far as the whole muting thing. Welcome to the wonderful world of chat bans. It wont change, it wont be fixed. It is, simply how it is. Effective but widely open to abuse. The only fix...is to simply not talk. Good luck with that.

Yea I honestly think the entire system is LAZY and INCREDIBLY UNPROFESSIONAL. And they wonder why their income from MMOs is FAR LESS than other mmos. You don't auto-mute your PAYING CUSTOMERS for things as small as that. They obviously have never worked a real job in their life. Probably always sat at a desk. But in REAL customer support, you don't treat customers like that because it is simply unprofessional. They went so far as to design a system solely for the purpose of griefing paying customers. They know this system can be abused easily, yet they allow it anyway. Lazy. Pure laziness.
I also want to mention that I have heard of entire guilds just forming up JUST to grief people they don't like by having an entire guild report them for spamming and THEY REWARD these guilds, they are literally rewarded with what they want. I had real high hopes for this game but something this ridiculous is not worthy of paying for. I suggest anyone that is a reasonable individual not spend a dime on this game either.

You seem to think that ONE allegedly paying customer should have the right to flood and annoy 50 other paying customers, which is what you do when you spam, post everything three or ten times, or act poorly in zone chat. This works in other games where the majority of customers have to deal with the abuse of a handful of individuals, and it is refreshing to see that at least here there are ways for the community to deal with such people directly. It's very efficient.
For every person who gets "unfairly" muted, there are probably fifty who perfectly deserved it (49 of which will claim they didn't do anything wrong, that it was their sibling or their dog). If you believe you were unfairly muted, you can always contact a GM and get unmuted. From what I read, they will review the logs.

If you know of guilds who do this, then you report them to a GM, preferably with evidence, because it is presumably actionable and certainly logged. You don't give spammers and twits a free pass to spam and turn the Zone chat into a kindergarten only because there may be (which I have never seen actually seen) people who abuse a sensible, efficient community tool.
To follow up on your RL analogy, this would be like never ever arresting anyone only because there may be the rare corrupt cop out there. The consequences would be the same in either case.
Let's not forget that not being able to chat for 24h is not the end of the world. Most people, by far, get muted because they DID spam, because they DID harass, and because they DID act obnoxiously in the Zone chat. Strawman arguments shouldn't distract from that (e.g. the topic starter didn't get muted because some guild targetted him, but because he repeatedly posted everything three times, as he said himself).
It isn't reasonable that 20, 50, 100 people should have to ignore that 1 spammer or troll. You don't get muted if one or two other people dislike you or don't want to hear what you say. It does take more than that. It's almost always the result of the muted person actually having spammed or trolled in the Zone chat.

i report all spammers in chat, legitimate ones that is. Those players who are simply selfishly repeating the same thing over and over because they have no patience or can't comprehend that if they don't get an answer the 3rd time repeating it another 20 times won't make a difference, those players? I just put them on ignore. Life's too short to be worrying about those idiots.

No, that's saying he and others including me prefer this system because even though someone may be unfairly muted it's a much faster system to deal with trolls, spammers and rude idiots
I'd rather take an unfair 24 hour mute once in a while than endure people like in wow where the rules actually favor the spammers and trolls
If you get reported by a griefer guild (if they even exist, i've seen no proof of that besides your claim) then make a ticket. Sure it wont solve your 24 hour mute but it will flag said guild which could lead to a GM taking action down the road

Neither I nor anyone I play with has heard of these "greifer guilds" going around reporting people. *IF* such a thing is happening, it's a matter of time before those people wind up on some sort of ban list. Sure, that kind of sucks for you, but being the victim of a crime usually sucks, and usually does not get fixed within 24 hours either.

Uhm... that's not really true. What you see in game after the @ is a handle they chose for their account. Not their account name unless they used the same for both. And it wouldn't be the forum name either unless they used the same for both.
For example: I go by Runebane in the forums, but for all I know someone else could have @Runebane as their handle. And it certainly isn't my account name.

No, they do not. If enough people report you for spamming in WoW, you can't use the chat channels for some time anymore. It is like here, just that reports expire faster.
The last time I played WoW, and paid, I waited two weeks for a ticket answer, by the way. The game was full of bots, and nothing was done about it. It just isn't a good example, and maybe it is too big of a MMO to really have good methods available to them, and it has a toxic community. Blizzard tried, in the first year, to maintain the community and keep out twits. They even policed character names. After a year, they dropped this, and shortly after one of the early community managers left, because she no longer agreed with the company's direction (regarding the handling of the community). Misbehavior in WoW has no consequences, which is why the community there is the way it is.
At the end of the day, there are no perfect or abuse-free solutions. You either run the risk that someone may occasionally get punished unfairly, or you expose the majority of your community to abuse. If we assume that 1 out of 100 muted players was a victim of harassment, it is more efficient to look into that one case instead of having to look into 100 reports, where in 99 cases the temporary chat bans were justified.
