Let me just start by clarifying quickly, the only way to build a hunter ranger for PVP is trapper. They dominate all comers, I however do not like the trapper style and am more preferential to Archery but they are not NEARLY as good for pvp am I the only one thinks that the ridiculous Over-Powering of one specific paragon over all others is kinda HAMSTER, I'd like to be able to have a decent chance and some balance between different builds.
I was hoping for some changes to the archery paragon but nope... they added nothing of any significance to the archery and made the trapper even more powerful.. they could already root, interrupt your attacks and skills, attack with all their encounters in a second flat rooting you 3 different ways and dealing enough damage to kill you twice but just in case now they can stun you as well left completely defenseless after the first hit till dead mashing your attack button trying to squeeze any sort of attack in. And they end up with no cool-downs able to use encounters endlessly.
Why offer any diversity if there is clearly only one build that is overly superior, 9/10th of the community uses the same cheese builds.
Not to be too hard on the archery build though, in PVE vs bosses with millions of health is where they excel vs on big slow/not moving target for sustained damage (bosses).. trapper in PVE are good at racking in dmg vs crowds.
The sheer lack of pvp ability, balance, and diversity before EE was bad, now the builds that were behind were left behind and the cookie cutter cheese builds are miles ahead.
No real skill or strategy, or epic battles just build the SAME BUILD and spam em with everything.
And every class has THAT build its not limited to the HR, but I main HR so thats why i use it so heavily as an example.

This is so alien to me, I'm used to playing mmo's where the dev team knows the game inside out & put in the required focus to get things right.
There are plenty of suggestions out there and MAYBE they could hold a player FOCUS GROUP like proper companies do and find out what the majority of serious players think & would like to see?

Towards the OP, I don't PvP at all so I can't so anything on that front. But with regards to the different paragons and paths to choose I think it is quite interesting. Some classes have specific paths that are better, like you said, and some others have different ways people go and it is usually split fairly even.
For example, Thaum/Renegade CW, Executioner/Saboteur TR, Faithful/Virtuous DC, and I think the GWF has 2 that most people choose as well. So I guess it just comes down to the people and what they like/how they play.
