Weird Forum Issues - Opening a thread in a tab redirects that tab back to the STO forum main page

mustrumridcully0mustrumridcully0 Member Posts: 12,963 Arc User
Is anyone else experiencing this issue?
I usually open threads in a new tab, so I have multiple threads open. But for some reason, everytime I open a thread in a new tab, that tab is redirected to the STO forum main page. I can actually use the Back Button then to get back to the thread I opened originally.

I am using Firefox.

Same here as well, it's kind of annoying as I like to open several tabs to check on stuff I find intresting.

just to make sure I'm understanding you guys correctly as to whats going on. If you're checking on different threads and attempt to open up tabs for threads A B C it's directed all of those tabs back to the forum in general and not the actual threads?

Correct. It seems to try to go to the page (as the window says the title) but after like 5 seconds it kicks us back to the main forum page in general

Yes, started yesterday, we already had a post but it got moved to "Other Tech" category.

    https://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline#/discussion/1247268/forum-redirecting-to-main-page-when-clicking-links

Happens on my Kindle, Chromebook and PC.

Also, another odd thing it does...when I click on the post anywhere it will highlight the entire page. But that may be something off with the Silk browser on my Kindle Fire. Ok now it is not doing that, so it may not be related.

Yeah that's exactly what is happening and it's still happening for me. Kinda happy that it isn't just my browser being a little TRIBBLE. It's both Chrome and Firefox that does this for me.

Lovely, now the darn page is flipping over to the Main Category page WHILE I am composing a post.

Is that because saving the draft is making it refresh???? I don't get what is going on.

Update. Happens for all Cryptics/ARC forums, not just STO. Neverwinter, CO and ARC "proper" have the same issue.

Maybe unrelated, but it could also be another symptom of the underlying issue. It seems to have happened around the same time as the issue with the redirects away from the thread:

If I click on "Forums" in the breadcrumbs on the top of the forum navigation, the link should lead to:
    https://www.arcgames.com/social/forum
    I am then directed to
    https://www.arcgames.com/de/social/forum

So I am directed to the German forum overview. This happens despite me being logged in and having switched to English/US in the language selector on the top of the page.

My browser or IP would probably identify as from Germany. I wonder if this issue occurs particularly to people whose native language/locale would be set to something different than English/US?

Note that that forum overview is also showing no forums at all. This is even true for the https://www.arcgames.com/en/social/forum, so the forum overview being empty could be unrelated.

OK.. I figured out WHY I am getting interrupted by a "refresh" while composing.

I am getting in number counts at the top of the page in Notifications and Inbox.

And they have a little red number counter on them? When I get in a new number on that icon or the number goes up by one....it refreshes the entire page...and I lose my message or post.

So, I am wondering what else, besides updates to those Notification and Inbox number counts, could cause the Forums to refresh.

Well I've got no notification and nothing in my inbox to my knowledge and i'm getting the exact same problem.
Doesn't happen all the time but seems like every other time i open a thread it's going back to the front page.
This in on PC using Chrome. Everything was fine yesterday.

This isn't just a weird issue with threads on the forum. It's weird one in general, as it resets to the forum home page, even if I'm tabbed out. A thread about this was started yesterday, and I think @baddmoonrizin or one of the other mods moved it to bug reports.

But, as I said, since it's happening even when I'm tabbed out. It's more of a general forum issue, than a thread issue.

Yeah, I know some people are seeing that, too.

So, I was wondering what would cause a refresh besides what I noticed with the notifications and inbox counters updating. What else would do it?

I could guess: someone else making a new post in the category we are in at the moment????

My bad. I moved that first one to the technical issues section. Sounds like it's possibly a Vanilla issue?

Possibly. As I said, it happens when I'm tabbed out. For example, I'll be in general discussion, tab over to read something on mem-alpha or watch and anime or something, and come back to being on the home page instead of general discussion. Or if I go afk with it in general discussion, I come back to the home page.

But it also happens while I'm here. Did it to me when I was doing a post in the To Many Ground Endeavors thread.

No problem, BMR. I think there were only 3-4 people complaining at the time.
Now it looks more extensive... @ilithyn mentioned it is across all of Cryptic's forums.

Yeah it sounds like it. I've been to both the Neverwinter forum, the Champions Online forum and the official ARC forum, they all have this bug. So it's more likely to be something with Vanilla than anything local.

Just had this happen while I was working on a post to another thread. All I got back was a burp sound and chuckle from the forums when it ate my post. :|
