Carrier aircraft

Sorry if this question has been asked before I've had a look around for it, but might have missed it.

question is how do you activate the carrier fighters on my top left i have what can only be described as 2 panels, each with 6 spaces in them, above each panel is 4 icons, now question is do i have activate each fighter one by one, or does clicking on one of the 4 icons above do that.

Also do the 4 icons on the bottom middle display do the same thing.

Thanks for any help guys.

There is an activation/launch button available for you to put in your tray. Its 1 button per hanger (so up to 2 on a carrier) and depending on the kind of pets you have you launch 6 fighters or 2 frigates (each).

Independent of that there are 4 carrier commands where you can influence the pets behavior a bit. :)

You can set them on several modes. Pressing one of the modes will release 3 fighters then wait 30 secs and push again to drop 3 more and have the full 6 at your disposal :) Hover over the buttons to see what each of them do, have fun and good luck out there.

Ah many thanks I was not sure if I had to activate each aircraft one by one or if just pressing one of the icons above the panels done it for you, many thanks.

On the top of each of those carrier windows.. the ones with the six slots.. there are 5 buttons on each.

Button 1 - Launches a wing of fighters. If you have six spaces then you are using fighters, hitting the button will launch 3 fighters and then will go on cooldown for a short period of time. Once the cooldown is expired, you can launch another 3 giving you six active. As fighters get destroyed in combat, you will need to launch more to take their place.

Should you not wish to click on the Carrier Windows, then I would do as Peterconnor said and map the 'Launch Fighters' to your hot bar.

The other 4 buttons in order are

Attack - Clicking this will set the hangar to attack mode. Fighters will engage and attack whoever you have targeted.
Escort - Your fighters will stay around the Carrier and defend it.
Intercept - Similar to Escort mode, but the fighters will focus on incoming missiles/Torps and try and destroy them before they hit the carrier.
Dock - This recalls all fighters to return to the ship.
    Insert witty signature line here.

You can also allocate a key-bind to the hangar launch ability in your Powers tray. Press P to bring up the Powers list when you're in space, scroll down to the relevant hangar, and drag it into the tray to a keybind you prefer.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

They are gone the moment you jump back into sector space or inrp seen as they docked before you jumped. Then when you enter the next system you have to call them out again and the slots will fill up again is if a new

They are supposed to dock (and get repaired once docked), but the Recall command doesn't always work very well. If I sit still they seem to dock more consistently, but still not 100%.

    They used to.

Now, for me anyway, they seem to just return to the ship and sit stationary rather than moving about.

    Ultimately it doesn't matter.
You do not run out of fighters/shuttles/frigates. Launch them and leave them if you want. There will always be more to launch the next time you want them.

Still, I wish that function worked more reliably.
It's bad enough that I, as a Captain, send pilot after pilot out to die (and shuttles die. A lot), but now even the ones that survive I leave stranded all over space, only occasionally in a place where they can find sanctuary.
