I saw someone mention this torpedo in a video and got curious.
So it is a mission reward for this: https://sto.gamepedia.com/Mission:_The_Shadow_Knows but can anyone tell me what is so special about that torpedo?
I'm looking at it ingame and not seeing it.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.
Good question. I didn't have a regular photon torpedo to compare it too so far (at least not the mark and rarity.) rickvic could be right, but I don't really remember the exact looks.

Yea... I think its the Discovery style torpedo, which is also available to everyone else through playing one of the two Discovery missions available in the Age of Discovery arc. Don't remember which one off the top of my head. Looks a bit like the tadpole style torpedo used in TOS, but more streamlined.
One thing to note is that using Torp Spread removes its tail so you're shooting a volley of blue/white balls rather than tadpoles. Kinda suffers from the same issue the Advanced Radiant Quantum Torpedo has with Torp Spread.

So if you're shooting tadpoles, does that mean that you're firing frogs at high yield?
Makes me want to do that mission just to see it in action.

"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
For the fastest Photon Torpedo, get the Kelvin Timeline Photon - 4 seconds rather than 6.

Plus it got half the travel time as well, flying at hargh'peng speed.

Yeah I use the prototype on my DSC toon and only difference with it and standard photon I can tell is the visuals, so your torp have this white/blue tadpole/teardrop shape when using high yield or normally and are white/blue balls with torp spread, the explosion is also white/blue in color but that's only visual and does no additional effects.
Tracking seems to be slightly different too, instead of the direct-line style it splines in arcs a little like a modern air-to-air missile which looks a little more aggressive and realistic. It may even keep tracking in a slightly wider arc, it does not seem to loose its lock on iffy fast ships at bad tracking angles (though that is just an impression, I have no way of testing it).
On the down side, the wimpy squeak sound it makes firing is lousy for keeping track of launches by ear since it gets lost in the rest of the noise so easily.
