Maintenance today?

According to the launcher we have maintenance today, but why? No other Cryptic game seems to have it, that is no other game launcher advertises it, and as far as I know there's no holidays this week that would interfere with normal Thursday maintenance. Though granted I'm not from the US and can't recall all your odd holidays so I might be wrong here.
Also nothing so gamebreaking that it can't wait till Thursday, at least nothing that haven't been broken so long that two more days would matter.

Just a glitch on the launcher, cross referencing it with consoles who does have maintenance on Tuesdays? Or is it going down? Asking because I was planning on playing this afternoon, but if it's being taken down for maintenance there's no reason for me to hurry home.

I think because infinity lb drops and all the sales end today but I cant be sure. Then it may also be a regular maint(server restart) to help with the lag too. It seems it isnt a too long maint

Changing/ending sales and lockboxes have never required the server to be taken down before, so I doubt it. And if it's just regular maintenance or to do with lag, why not wait for Thursday? Lag is no worse than otherwise and if there's no holiday on Thursday/this weekend, which the lack of maintenance in the other games suggests, then why not wait? And it's only STO, no other of Cryptic's games have maintenance today on PC.
And why no notification anywhere but on the launcher. Checker twitter, even checked fb which I otherwise never use. Nothing, nothing at all. I can see Kael forgetting to post the patch notes, it happens he's a busy guy and he may have got them too late in the day to post them before going home. But why no notification anywhere else.
They're gonna have a lot of pissed players later.

I know, that came right out of the blue...server is down even as we speak.
Is there is a patch or not. :(

It's shard maintenance, which is maintenance of the hardware, thus no patches.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

There is a patch, at least, when I tried to log in just now, the launcher downloaded and installed a patch. Because of the maintenance, I couldn't actually log in.

However, I cannot find any patch notes so I have no idea what, if anything, was fixed or changed.

They always say "shard maintenance" and "please check the forums". LOL!
And nothing being noted on the forums, there is no way to know if there is a patch.

It would be nice if there WAS, though.....so many things acting in a buggy state.
    Including folks having problems downloading.

game just patched, no patch notes yet. I suspect it's an emergency fix for the "Beacon of Kahless killing the servers" issue.

@ambassadorkael#6946 Do you have some patch notes somewhere? Personally I'd like to see what's getting fixed.

If that is true, and it doens't look like it, then why on a Tuesday? No other of Cryptics games on PC have maintenance today, this is specific to STO. SO it's not ordinary shard maintenance.

I was kind of shocked to see server maintenance today. I wish I could say i was even remotely surprised to see no mention of it on the forums though.

If it had been just maintenance, no big deal, but there definitely is a patch so it would be nice to know what was changed. Barring it being a fix for an exploit, there should be some sort of mention at the least of what's going on.

I guess we'll see when the game comes back up.

Yup. We'll see. It patched on my PC and I'm here because it says, "Please check the forums."

Looks like maintenance ended early, at least the light on the launcher is green. Still I would love to know what was fixed/changed.

It seems like we're getting less and less notice on this type of thing. Sure, if there is truly a game-breaking problem that needs fixing, do what you need to do.

Otherwise, you gotta figure someone somewhere knew that the server would be going down. For folks who play at the same time (say 7-10am Pacific time / which ranges from early afternoon in Europe to prime evening hours in Asia Pac), you would never have known until you failed to logon this morning that the server was down.

Finding out as you're trying to logon is an unpleasant surprise.

Just a bit more notification would be much appreciated.

    Or another stealth patch.

Oooh...Conspiracy!!! The patch was most likely in relation to server interactions, which does not need explaining.

The notification of Server Maintenance has been on the launcher for nearly 16 hours before the server went down, which is completely normal.

I said nothing about a conspiracy - or do you always just leap to the crazy.

I merely said that it would be appreciated if we got more notice and noted that the current lead time is often insufficient for players who actually, you know, have lives, and only logon once a day at a set time in what would be the morning. You know, because I'm not so self-centered as to believe that the entire world revolves around California and it's time zone.

Again, I didn't say conspiracy or launch an unhinged tirade. I simply said a longer notification window would be appreciated.

Not everyone around the world has the time to logon several times a day to check for new notices, especially when other avenues of notification don't seem to have been utilized either.

The ask was for a courtesy, nothing more, nothing less.

I agree that more notice would be appreciated, but the amount of warning has not gotten noticeably shorter recently. I'm often online about 10PM Pacific (nine hours before maintenance usually starts) and the notice has always been up by then.

Good on you. I usually log off at what is around 3pm Pacific and don't get on again until about 16 hours later at the earliest. Which is in the middle of downtime when it happens.

The fact that there's such a relatively short amount of time between the notification going up and the maintenance starting have always been something of a nuisance for me. Most weeks it doesn't matter much because it's same procedure as every year James and when there's special maintenances like with the launch of a new season or something that's advertised well in advance. But on days like today it's really irritating and I wish they could give at least 24 hours warning when it happens. Not everything revolves around California and the Pacific timeszone. Maybe given how much they give a rat's TRIBBLE about everyone else they should just bar everyone outside the US from playing.

I've basically come to the point that if there are no patch notes... its back end hardware stuff rather than bug fixes. And with it happening on a Tuesday rather than the usual Thursday, and no holiday to explain the change... its probably an emergency maintenance or something.

I think maybe it's to align with next week. Q's is coming on Tuesday next week.

It actually was aimed at people trying to claim this was beyond normal and that they are entitled to be told everything that goes on, and that there must be something nerfed if nothing is said otherwise.

It has been virtually this way for the 8 years I've been playing. A maintenance has happening on a Tuesday is not abnormal, and they always give more than 12 hours notice, and it's always announced on the Launcher, which is the first thing everyone sees when booting up the game on the PC.

A changelog of inner-workings will bore the bejezzus out of anyone. They put up notes as a courtesy, not as a right, and if it's not changing anything with-in the game, then no-one can complain.

Lets not also forget that Thanksgiving holidays have just happened, and there might not even be a full cohort staffing the wheel. People are too quick to judge. Step back, take a breath, not everything is out to get you!

Personally, I think it's plainly obvious if they have nothing to say about the maintenance, they will say nothing.

What is it that leads people to demand they explicitly come here to say they have nothing to say?
