Jack of all trades

nikolunusnikolunus Member Posts: 162 Arc User
Looking for help building a jack of all trades ship. Looking to make the most balanced ship possible, not sure what ship in game has the most even stats and console/bridge officer layout. Or how I would split skill points to make it work right.
Space is vast, it's wonderful and maddening. Yet in that madness is some of the greatest beauty I have ever seen.

Look at this way, when militaries design and build tanks, they look at three things. Those are mobility, protection and fire power, it's a delicate balance to get right so experiment until you get the result you are after.

STO isn't really balanced for Jack of All Trades to handle all that well. You can kinda blend two main goals together, but trying for an all rounder that handles everything well tends to fall flat, at least currently(was better in times past, IMO).

If you're looking to dip into a decent two-synergy, try a Tactical-heavy Battle Cruiser like the Arbiter or Kurak. Survivability, firepower, and decent turnrate(though you might want an RCS or Pilot Spec secondary) all in one package that works well. Skill point wise, focus mostly on Tac, to the point that you can even go with the Tactical Ultimate without much compromise.

Science offensive powers require a fair bit of Skill points and hardware to get working well, so you need to come in from that being the primary if you want to go the Science route. The Cardassian Intel Science Dreadnought has all the needed spots for the gear you'd need with 5x Science consoles and a Secondary Deflector, and has a 4/3 weapon layout backed up with a Lt. Comm. Tactical spot. It won't be as easy to make durable as the Arbiter/Kurak and will put out less firepower from it's weapons, but still decent on those two regardless, while being a capable Science powerhouse. For Skill tree you're going to need to either have a primary focus (EPG, drain, Control) for the Science portion, or you're going to have to live with compromising your weapon damage a fair bit. For survivability, it's probably best to focus on Shield tanking Skills and abilities to keep the ship together.

The Walker is a good choice as is the Reliant, they can be versatile ships

Lt. Comm. Sci on a cruiser (like the Walker) isn't that great, unless you're using it for heals and utility powers only. On the offensive Science ability side, it falls short nowadays. Gravity Well 1, which would've been a nice goto Sci ability to slot in, got nerfed pretty hard when Season 13 came around, and even with a slight buff since then, it still fails to suck in most enemies into itself unless you have a large amount of ControlX. You'd need to fill all 3 Sci consoles with ControlX consoles, and probably add in some Universal Consoles on top of that, possibly even your Deflector too to get decent enough (and it'll still fall short of Gravity Well 3's draw-in), which will likely impact your firepower output, versus cramming firepower and critical enhancing consoles in Sci and Eng instead. Sub Space Vortex (lockbox power) and Destabilizing Resonance Beam need the enemy to hold fairly still, which makes them hard to use without Gravity Well. Feedback Pulse got beat to a pulp with the nerf bat in Season 13 (though, that one I kinda see the need for it to be nerfed). Energy Drains require quite a bit of DrainX to get working well, and many NPCs are bugged into being immune to it. Tachyon Beam can work OK, but it still needs DrainX, and works so much better paired with a Deteriorating Secondary Deflector (Science ships only) which lets it work through a shield facing faster and damage hull too via it's proc.

The T6 Vestas are also very good. If you can afford it, get a Crossfield as that is a superb ship.

If you want a jack of all trades ship it has to be a rader. So I would recommend the Ouroboros.

What it does not have is a lot of hit points. BUT you can make up for that. The bridge officer seating is universal so if you need more tank, just slap on some more bridge officer powers that give bonus resistance.

Apart from the lack of hit points you can do pretty much anything you want with it.

If you want to do Science it can do science well enough (not as good as a ship with a secondary deflector and two more science console slots, but at least you get a bonus to science powers from its temporal mechanic).

If you want to do conventional damage it gets a bonus to damage done against a ships rear arc, so while it dose only have 6 weapon slots, you can make up for that a bit with piloting, and it dose still have five tactical console slots.

Honestly I cant believe no one has suggested a raider yet. They are the jack of all trades ship class in STO. Why do people always forget about them?

cause their kinda not. raiders are by nature glass cannons. any good spike means a respwan, yeah skilled player can minmizes this but it's always a risk.

the universial slots are kinda of a lie, you can use them for what ever. but if it's not spike dmg your not gonna do but so well.
