Do you need to be a subscriber in order to play featured episodes? There is one always there, but it is always greyed out.
Also, I'm already level 38 - am I leveling too fast?! Seems like I am leveling too fast compared to other games.
Love the stories and, quite surprisingly, I love the game. Even though the away mission mechanics are pretty clunky. I got too used to warframe. :-)

Ranking is easy in STO. New characters can easily go through one or two new ranks/ships a day with a few hours of play. It's when you hit admiral that the progression tends to slow down, working on all the specialties and reputations that are above and beyond the ranking levels. The Duty Officer system can also take some time, call it a month or so, to max out commendation xp.
Figured out the Duty Officer stuff (I think) and try to keep it busy as often as sanity allows.
R&D I gave up on it. The resources get depleted quick and it's a bear to try and get raw resources (for me, anyway).
The ignore player feature gets used a whole lot more than I like to use it, but other than that, so far, I like it. Zone can be a cruel, cruel, place.
Not at all, STO can be played & enjoyed completely free with most of the game not requiring any real-world money spent at all, but keep in mind the other way to earn in-game perks will require much "grinding".
As, fftt, already stated Cryptic recently just removed the ability to even subscribe unless you're already a subscriber so now currently the only way to be a subscriber, if new, is the Life Time Subscriber option which is $300 unless on sale for $200.
Most of the story-line missions are indeed good so use them to level-up & enjoy them as it seems you are. Some of the latter missions reward good items too. Try not to get caught-up in the "I need to grab the newest shiny item/ability" & if you don't have the need to be the best of the best you can enjoy STO for a lengthy while.
Unfortunately, Cryptic's decision to discontinue the regular subscriber option has been replaced with an Elite Starter Pack. In a couple ways it offers better than the previous subscription model & then some areas it offers less. Regardless, there are currently many technical glitches for players that have bought this Elite Starter Pack so I would delay purchasing it till Cryptic fixes it.
Also, usually you can immediately replay a mission once you've completed it for the first time then any following completions require a 30 minute cool down.
So.. from what little I know, it seems that the idea is to blast your way to level 50 and a lot of other stuff opens up for you?! I noticed the PVE queues - 90% of it is level 50+. Is that right?
More and more stuff opens up as you rank up yes. The details of what unlocks and when are a little pointless considering how fast you can reach fleet admiral rank. It'll all be open soon enough if you can keep interest going. You can definitely get an abundance of crafting resource materials (and dilithium) from PVE queues, but if you're after specific very rare ones those queues can oftentimes be dead. Other sources, besides the anomalies or the exchange, would be the duty officer or admiralty systems.
Turned zone chat off a long, long, long time ago and haven't missed it an iota.

Unfortunately, the featured episode event has ended. Not sure why Cryptic did not remove it yet. Normally, you would be able to play featured episodes as long as your character is at least level 10.
The following is an announcement for the 3rd and final week reward for playing the Renegade's Regret featured episode missions. It was announced on Thursday April 19th which means the last opportunity for a low level character to play the mission would have been Thursday April 26th morning before the game goes offline for patching.

Cryptic can be pretty bad about cycling these things and it's been known to take weeks before an ended FE gets put into the episodes. Although they have been pretty good about taking away the mission from the FE tab, they dropped the ball this time around.
A little correction there..I wacked this as soon as I hit level 10 last friday, or atleast I think it was last friday, on my rom delta eng..It must be greyed out because cryptic did say it would be running for only an extended week or so and so they forgot to move it into the appropriate story ine likie all the other FE's in there..So I assume this is likely a FE that got forgotten to be put in place..
Adu-Uss Firefox NCC-93425-F (LVL 65 FED AoY ENG) UR/VR MKXV Fleet Intel Assault Cruiser (July 2016)
Jean-Uss Seratoga Ravenna (LVL 60 FED Delta ENG) UC/R MKVI Bajoran Escort (April 2018)
Dubsa-RRW Mnaudh (LVL 50 FED allied ROM Delta ENG) Warbird (May 2018)
Marop-IKS Orunthi (LVL 50 KNG Delta ENG) BoP (May 2018)
Kanak'lan-TRIBBLE (LVL 65 DOM Gamma ENG) TRIBBLE (June 2018)
If I had to guess, Cryptic will probably move it to the standard mission list around the time the next FE gets released (which I'm expecting to be in the next couple of weeks).
As far as leveling fast, from strictly doing the story missions only, I'll typically reach 60 by around the Cardassian missions. I'd say that you're pretty much guaranteed to go up at least one level per mission up to somewhere around the Solanae stuff. Personally, I find the leveling to be a little too fast for my tastes, but I know there are many players out there who are okay with it.
