My original toon is a Fed sci officer... all his ships are named after shades of blue. One officer uses fantasy/historical cities(camelot, avalon, shagri la(sp?), rome things like that) another uses mythological sea creatures(maybe air creatures too dont remember) and another uses Roman God, one i deleted used Bladed Weapons(Balisong, Scimitar, Dagger) another fantasy sword names... my most recent used celestial bodies of our solar system. I usually just random pick my klingon and my 1 rom toon

I have characters named after family members and ship names that are something related to each one.

My main toons in each faction are variations of my name and I have a female toon in each faction named after my wife. On the KDF side I made up my own Klingon House with characters named after myself, my wife, daughter, stepson, sister, brother-in-law. I also have another female toon in each faction named after my mom, one of the original Trekkies (she was in her teens when TOS came on). I grew up watching Trek with her.

All but a very few of my many toons has "ari" somewhere within the name. I usually just keep clicking on random until something comes up that I can add ari to somewhere and not end up totally ridiculous. Ships, no real scheme to it, sometimes I keep what they come with, sometimes I don't.
    LTS and loving it.

My method of naming toons is hitting the random name button until something good comes up. I usually do the same for Rom and KDF ships because I have a poor handle on their names. I think the only Romulan ship name I came up with on my own is the RRW Teel'deer, and even that might've been a minor change from something that randomly flashed by. One Fed toon pretty much just has a grabbag of names that sounded good at the time. For all my toons, advanced versions of an old ship (Say, a T6 Tactical Escort vs my basic Defiant) get a roman numeral tacked on to the old name.

That said, I do have themes on a couple characters:

My main is a Vulcan Engineer who mostly flies cruisers and names ships after regions of Greece, mostly because for some reason my first end-game goal was a Sovereign-class named Arcadia. So I have the Lacedaemonia, Attica, Ithaca, and so on. Her main ship has been the USS Arcadia III since the Intel Assault Cruiser's been out.

My newest toon is an Andorian Science captain whose ships are named after drinks, like her T6 Battlecruiser named the USS Rusty Nail, the 31C Multi-Mission Science Vessel USS Amasec, and the Krenim Science Vessel Macallan.

Some of them. And to varying degrees.

One KDF character, all the ships she's flown are weapon-ish names (Broadsword, Rapier, etc)
I've got my Elsa character from Frozen, flying the USS Arendelle, with a bridge crew of Anna + Disney princesses. With Tetryon weapons, the Breen cold space set, and various cold ground abilities from the Winter event. And a snowman pet.
One character has a roster of doffs named alphabetically (Annie, Beth, Chris, etc... not those names exactly)
Another character has a roster of doffs named after characters from a fanfic I was reading at the time.

Meanwhile, other characters are just random. /shrug

    As a general rule yes.
My AoY is Cassandra Truth. IE a true thing no one will believe. Her ship and hull number are taken from the cinematic for AoY of the Constitution ship that held the line at Caleb IV.
Or my crew of 'misfits' on the William Porter.
Or would be marines crewing the Minor Province.
IE most are the get the job done kind not the look pretty during inspection.
And my first AV kept for posterity commanding the Halsey. Because it was a ship my RL father served on.

P.S. I should add that if I don't have a theme for a ship and crew then I usually don't keep them.

This post makes me want to make the following Fed character:

    Indoctrinated Drone
    U.S.S. Federation Rhetoric

    And to create the fleet:

Yeah, I pick a theme and go with it. I'm very unoriginal. I'll pick a character from a book/tv/movie/video game and use that.

On some characters I do, others I don't. For example, I have a Gorn character whose ships are all named after real or mythic reptiles (Alligator, Komodo, Bahamut from Final Fantasy, etc.); a Naausicaan whose crew are all named after Dreadnoks (from G.I. Joe) and given appropriate uniforms; things like that. I have just as many characters whose captain and crew names are random selections and their ships' names pulled from a pool of names that I like to use (Patton, Righteous, Johnny Tremain, Valley Forge, and so forth)

For my original characters I just go with a name which might fit their profession and maybe race. For characters I based on from shows movies and games I will go for a name of something involved in their respective origin whether it be technology, other characters, or ships if they are from a sci-fi. For an example I made a Roger Wilco from Space Quest toon and named a few of his ships after ones from the games that he used or was stationed on such as the Aluminum Mallard, SCS Eureka, SCS Goliath, and Deep Ship 86. I made an Adam Jensen toon from the Deus Ex series and named his ships Picas, Sarif, and his current Phantom escort Deus Ex.

Nice! I made some Dreadnok boffs for one of my toons as well. ^^ I also have a Gorn toon that I pretty much made into a 1920s/30s style gangster, and I usually name his ships after gangsters of that era, such as the IKS Al Capone, Pretty Boy Floyd, and so on.

Resident TOS, G.I. Joe, Transformers and hair metal fangirl.

Closest thing I have to this is an alt fed engineer named Sarah June Smith of the USS Bad Wolf (Kelvin Intel Dreadnought) The crew however is not themed. Everyone else is just a mix.

For the bridge officers, I leave the name they got when I recruited them. For the Captains, it's random and whatever sounds nice to me and close enough to their species' own naming standards (that said, my main's first name "Cyboline" comes from M'Ress' first name "Shiboline" from the various novels and comics).

This is different for the ships:
-for my main, the main ship is always an "Oriale" (name of the main snake antagonist of an obscure but good French cartoon from the 2000s), the current one is the -E
-for my main KDF, it's related to siblings (the current one is "Be'nl'", Klingon for "sister")
-for my main RR, it's related to time and space (the current one is "Suriuu", Rihannsu for "Present time")
-for the TOS character, it's a random name from current trends (the current one is "Corvus", the name of the corvette used by the Imperial protagonist from the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront II game)

My Rom primary and all doff names come from the Dune series. (Thufir, Maud'Dib, Duncan You-Da-Ho',etc). My Fed Primary and all doffs come from the Clive Cussler series. (Dirk Pitt, Al Giordino, Admiral Sandecker).

I let the computer randomly generate names for my KDF toons.

    Some.

I name certain ships with reference to something about paranormal accounts (aliens & UFOs). Some are about RSE pride, at least one is just meant to be funny (the lukari scout science saucer is called "aliens"), my Annorax is purple and named Vanu Sovereignty after Planetside2, planning on renaming my fleet Scryer to Scythe.

My characters are named after greek goddesses or constellations, or things I come up with that I like, or based on species-typical naming conventions.

It's a lot of fun being able to rename ships, characters, Boffs, just wish they'd allow I.R.W. on all Romulan ships already, am so beyond fed up with the republican nonsense.

Characters I often make of my own.
Ships I name after heros of mine.

USS Hoagland, after Richard C. Hoagland.
My Tholian Widow is named USS Steven Greer.
I got a Lukari ship named USS Tsoukalos, after Giorgio Tsuokalos
    You get the idea. :)

Yes and no. For my main sometimes ill name them for favorite characters. Other times not.

On my main I have a head RP of a squadron of escorts with the Manticore class DE as flagship. The Manticore class is named Indefatigable but the smaller escorts are named after the Cyclone class patrol ships.

Some of them are more of a stretch because the 'Noks do open vests and sleeveless shirts so frequently and the game is more limited in those areas - though they can still be recognisable as the original three and Zartan, Monkeywrench, Thrasher, etc. - but it's almost creepy how well an Orion female with pink 'faux hawk' hair can be made to resemble Zarana...

Actually, the theme for that particular character's ships is that they're all Nausicaan Destroyers and their names start with Z; 'Zartan', 'Zarana', 'Zandar', 'Zanya', 'Zakerian' (ran out of Dreadnoks, so that one was actually named after a certain pastry chef...) and so forth...

Nope. I play too many games and have too many alts to think of anything serious to call them so my ships call on the wonderful random name generator, and my characterrs have the first tthing which pops into my head. My AoY toon for instance is named Mosna with the surname Doit. A little fun never hurt anybody.

Still waiting to be able to use forum titles

I name all my characters using in lore names and the ships are named using sourced names of planetary regions native to the race of the character.

So my Bajoran Tac captain is called Shakaar and flies a T6 Defiant called the USS Rakantha (Rakantha Province on Bajor).

My KDF Klingon captain is called Tevone (looked it up, appears to be a klingon name), she flies a T6 Kolasi Siege Destroyer called the NFV Raylon (province on Nausicaa)

One of my toons I name ships after cars I've driven. Another's are named after Metallica songs (Kelvin Intel Dreadnought U.S.S. Creeping Death \m/ ). One has ships named with variations on my dead dog's name. MANY of them fly ships named by whatever random song was playing in the background when it was commissioned.
