Has it still not aired? Can I still froth with rage over it in the countdown until it airs? How long in seconds until I'm forced to have an opinion on it based on the episode itself and not on whatever pops into my head?

Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

repped into the story. there are nitpicky issues of course. while it is its own thing, i felt every iteration in there. the ideals, that each series has presented is brought into this.

Well then... just watched the aired episode one, I really don't care for Burnham. It seems like they want us to root for her, but she is just so belligerent in this first episode, I'm getting a real Captain Ahab vibe from her.

The Klingon makeup also seems really hard to act in, it is way to thick to convey any proper emotions.

    Ep 1 spoilers:
So if I understood things correctly, the Klingons have been in self-isolation since Archer's time? That seems particularly odd...

...and ye olde Klingon ships with cloaks, yay for continuity. ;) At least they said the beacon was sending out a signal... although the light from it already being visible to other star systems is just poor science.

The fact that this was a to be continued two-parter leaves me unable to give any proper review as I'm only dealing with a fragment of the story.

Still not planning to watch the rest, but I'll watch what I can for free so I can back up my complaints with examples.

Wish there had been a vote DOA. Wretched comes to mind I really wanted to be wrong but sadly CBS proved I was right. Bad makeup for starters didn't anyone teach the artists the sponge technique for skin textures? Klingon armor looks like someone stuffed the actors into a gold plated birdcage. The waist treatment reminds me of Queen Elizabeth's clothing all they needed was a ruffled collar to make it complete. Just awful.

    I am in the middle.

Special effects and filming of space scenes, extraordinary.
Actors are in sync with each other and their roles, they play like a team.
Not enough of the actual story played out to tell if that is going to be any good.

Best thing about this: Stupidity started a war with the Klingons. Cool.
I will watch and see what happens.

Though I have to say: Can any of the actors in the Klingon makeup even move their mouths? LOL! Poor guys!

Watched the second episode, didn't improve my thoughts on it at all.

As I've said before in other threads, the decision to retcon the appearance of one of the most iconic alien races was just idiotic imo. On top of that, you have:
    * Frequent use of holographic communication, something that was not developed and deployed until 2373 in the Prime Universe (there's no way this is Prime, I'd say we are looking at a fourth universe, the TRIBBLE Universe).

    * Type 2 phasers now fire blaster bolts rather than phaser beams.

    * A first officer left her post during a potential combat situation to call a diplomat.

    * An entire bridge crew seemed more than happy to follow an obvious attempt at mutiny.

    * A previous mind-meld somehow allowed real-time telepathic communication from Vulcan to the edge of Federation space.

    * One Klingon house makes significant use of cloaking technology, even though the Klingons do not have such technology for another decade in the Prime Universe.

    * First Officer explicitly states they need to capture the Klingon leader alive, then takes it upon herself to kill him anyway.

I know there were other things that bothered me during the two episodes, but those are all I can remember.

The camera seemed always tilted making it hard to follow some scenes for me. Pacing seemed off and the whole jetpack scene....meh.

    Eh, it was mediocre.

Klingons were silly. Except for being warlike, they were opposite of real Klingons. And the whole bald thing... nearly as bad as the movie version of the Kilrathi in the Wing Commander movie. I guess hairless makes them seem 'scarier'?
Bridge on bottom, interesting. Changed just to be different, I assume.
If the main character wasn't female, I assume the uniforms would be less 'fashionable'. :D
Jetpack scene... Hey Spock did it and it was cool. So why don't we do it?
Klingon ship or generic 'scary bad guy' ship? You decide.
Walking a delta shield in the sand; epic eye roll inducing.
Did the camera guy have scoliosis or did they mean to not shoot straight?
    Lens flairs, just 'cause...
And lastly... you don't even see the Discovery in the first episode. How can I bash it if I don't see it? ;)

I have a 5.8% desire to see any more of this show & 0% desire to pay for it via CBS's money grab AllAccess.
My hope is that it fails, and this branch of whatever timeline you want to call it collapses and disappears utterly. And then someone at CBS comes to the realization that a funky new take on another freaking prequel wasn't a good idea and lets try a new show that continues the timeline in the 'Prime Timeline' way!

It will be a while before i will be able to see it, assuming Sky doesn't take exclusive rights in the UK and assuming it's not behind another paywall service.

I suppose i could pull in a few favors in elsewhere and get a look at it sooner, same with The Orville and then decide. Chances are that my vote won't come for a while out yet.

TRIBBLE looks like it ripped off some of STO's ships (Bortasqu, Patrol Escort Refit, Akira).

I did not like the Michael character. I truly believe that if the story had been centered around Michelle Yeoh's character, it would have been something good to watch. The fact that she was just "Guest Starring" for this 2-part pilot didn't help. As for Michael, I feel that she was just being a more psychotic and violent version of Tom Paris when he disobeyed orders and was locked in the brig. It's sad that the writers and producers made this African-American character so stereotypical of the street hoodlum. At least, Ben Sisko had some worthy aspects to his character; Michael just takes matters into her own hands. Some have commented that maybe she didn't attend Starfleet Academy. It might actually make sense.

An interesting point was made on another forum where Michael was really meant to be a sleeper agent of the Vulcans under Sarek's control. At this point, it wouldn't be a bad idea, but there would need to be a lot of explaining as to why the Vulcans would want this, especially after the founding of the Federation.

It looks like I will be sticking to the Orville.

I would like to note that TRIBBLE does have some interesting things that I believe would work well here in STO. I would like to see the ships and other TRIBBLE toys come over here. I think STO will be the best place where TRIBBLE could reside rather than All Access.

Oh i found the first few episodes on youtube before they got removed.

So my thoughts on both episodes, i don't see the silliness in the Klingons, but rather they appear to be Klingon in a lot of ways although the collecting of the dead is new. They are unforgiving, brutal and honorable to their own aims, they like the TOS Klingons and the TNG Klingons want to retain their Klingon values in the face of rising Federation values. So that tracks. However i found Chris Obi's T'Kuvma character very wooden, flat and monotinous but even through that i found quite a bit of continuity between the series and Discovery, there was one moment where Chris actually showed some acting ability but that was about as much as i could see. I don't mind the Klingon appearance as much as when it was first seen in the teasers.

Michael Burnham's character is based on her background on Vulcan, she was taught and trained to think like a Vulcan, so in her mind the action to attack first was one of Logic based on what previous Vulcan encounters with Klingons have shown. Klingons do not respond to the ideal of peace and the only thing they understand is violence. Even in her moment of mutiny and assault on the Captain, to her way of thinking, she needed to attack first but the Captain wasn't acting on that recommendation.
As the Vulcan saying goes: The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Burnham was willing to sacrifice herself to save the Captain and her crew even if it meant violating every Federation regulation in the book.

I found Saru a little stuffy through most of the pilot episodes, the idea to run away at the first chance until a little of his species is revealed, that one half is hunter and the other half is hunted and he is from the latter. But once the writing got over that element Saru pulled out a plan to attack T'Kuvma's ship, i wouldn't mind if he kept some of his fear back during potential conflict situations and provide some ideas and analysis like he did at that moment. i could see some big improvement to his character.

The rest of it was fine, no real problem with any of it.

From what I understand they got the idea that Klingons collect and embalm their dead from Star Trek 4. Spock identifies a Klingon mummification glyph

    * First Officer explicitly states they need to capture the Klingon leader alive, then takes it upon herself to kill him anyway.
    1. Holograms were around long before that in the link, the holodecks for example go back to mid 24th century, it's very possible it could of happened a lot sooner. It clearly visible that holo communication from the mid 23rd century still had a lot of bugs to work out.
    2. Phaser compression rifles can fire phaser beams or bolts as well, it's likely a setting on the pistol.
    3. She said it was relevant, in her case she needed to be sure of her goal because of the stand off with the Klingons.
    4. Happy? Saru objected 3 times, the other officers looked on a little lost until Burnham forcefully made her intentions known until the Captain made it to the bridge.
    5. When Burnham was young she had Sarek's katra in her head, this allowed him to guide his thoughts to a distance telepathic communication, but at a physical cost.
    6. Canonically, it would be just a little over a decade beforethe Klingons officially got cloaking technology from the Romulans. But what about unofficially?
    7. At first this also didn't make any sense, but Burnham was not far from being killed by Qov and she looked a little uneasy on her feet after getting herself free, she may not of known that her phaser was set on kill in that particular moment, but based on her reaction after being saved, it could of also been revenge.

Several hundred years of Klingon values and beliefs, there could be a large difference between the various Klingon groups at different points, they seem rather individual in their values from klingon to klingon. we don't know much about this side of their values in respecting the dead.

Well, the only character I really cared about is dead already. Not a fan of Burnham, nor of the way Klingons are portrayed. The whole Klingon plot seemed rushed and unconvincing. I have very mixed feelings about the first two episodes.
23 out of 24 warring houses are unified after a 5 minute talk? What utter nonsense!

There was a reason for that, Kol remained unconvinced and warned T'Kuvma to expect some form of revenge. T'Kuvma's prophecy about what will happen at that moment and then Starfleet's motto in a holo transmission from the Shenzhou. He used that as evidence to convince the other houses to go to war with the Federation due to the rising Federation Values, the Klingons were scared of losing their identity and needed to act to protect their own values by attacking the Federation. He got the support of 23 houses to go to war and let's be honest, Klingons are nothing without their wars!

When have Klingons ever needed a reason to go to war?

well after watching the first episode I can say this, I'm not paying monthly for this, I may and it's far from a sure thing, get a month when the season ends and binge watch it.

on the show itself my brother happen to walk in the room while I was watch it, and it didn't take two minutes for things about it to start annoying him. and he isn't even that much of a star trek fan, yet it was the same things fans keep complaining about.

if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.
