Core Assault - Jack in the Box - AFK penalty for playing smart?

asdsafasfasdsafasf Member Posts: 19 Arc User
So, one of my Characters has a Romulan Escort (Ha'feh Warbird). While it punches like a Asteroid, it has about the durabiltiy of wet tiolet paper*.

So when it was time for Jack in teh Box challenge of core assault, I did this:
Fly in under Battle Cloak.
Move to the exit side border of the Box.
And just wait.

Attacking requires flying under full trothle = likely to fly out of the box.
Killign enemies only resets their cooldown as a new one spawns.
And just staying alive inside the box brings progress. (I am not quite sure about surviving cloaked, however). And my team was able to do that better without me drawing aggro.

Now, Jack in the Box was the final challenge of this run. And my team was so far behind, the other team killed Regulator before we got out.

End result:
The Mission ended with a enemy Victory, without my team even making it past the 3rd Challenge.
I got no mark selection.
I was hit with a 2 hour "AFK Penalty".

That sounds like eitehr a bug being misinterpreted as AFK penalty (2 hour). Or me playing smart beign consdiered being AFK. Either one sounds like it could use a fix.

*I know the proper saying is "wet tissue paper". But tissue paper is designed to actually still have acceptable durability while wet. Toilet paper is designed to disolve when wet. So it fits a lot better.

'smart' is relative. When your team is behind, in something like Core Assault, worrying about respawn isn't 'smart'.

Killing things is, and that includes drifting outa the box, because if your team is that far behind, you might as well.
Last time I read the description the rule was: You get progress for being in the Box.
    Not for killing foes.
Not for flying out of the box.
    Not for being dead.

Could you be mixing up "Jack ind the Box" and "Swarm"?
Or was progress for killing foes actually tested (at wich point it might be a bug)?

in my experience, as long as SOMEONE is in the box, you get progress-generally that honor should go to someone in a tank, and the mission doesn't progress if things don't die.

which creates a bit of a dilemma if you're a speed addict like I am, since it's REALLY hard to stay motionless (there's not enough room in the box to move AND stay inside it most of the time) if you're not running a Fed-style BFAW cruiserboat with a turn radius of 'what's turning?" and no engine power. I usually 'dip' through the box in my Tork (Fleet Vor'cha) or raptors, because stationary tanking (which is all the box has room for) doesn't work.

but if things don't die during Jack, it doesn't progress.

Best movement plan for Jack in the Box, is to make sure you're beginning your attack run from inside, and going back through/across it as you pass, think "Figure eight" with a ship like yours-begin and end your run inside the box, and circle around-the angles for staying IN the box while still firing on a target and hitting it aren't good, and in the case of Voth NPC's, does nothing with those directional shield 'immune' powers they have.

If 'waiting in the box for the timer' worked, it would work for everyone-clearly it didn't work in your case, so I'd suggest that you're misinterpreting the purpose of the test.

    The description says:
Stay in the box for Progress.
More allies in box = quicker progress.
Enemies will spawn to get you out of the box. Considering that there is no kind of enemy taht could reliably and defedably push you out, tehre is only one way to "get you out of the box" I can think off - blowing you up.

Have you actually tested that not killing the enemies somehow makes that mission stop?

Yes. If you cloak and don't kill squat, there is ZERO progress. I did this with 4 other rommies when this map first came out. We all cloaked and parked. ZERO progress. So yeah the progress is for killing things while in the box. You think the devs were too stupid to think of 5 cloak vessels cloaking and parking? You seriously thought they were that bad of a game designer? I mean I realize the bar is pretty low...but come on.
They could have just turned off cloaking (-10k debuff on Stealth) while in the box. I actually considered them smart enough to do that, rather then add in a hidden condition (must kill enemies) and telling nobody of it.

From the days of purely textbased inputs we have the concept of a "Magic String". A input that has effect, but was not hinted at in any place. I was hoping they were smart enough to avoid repeating such a mistake.

yes, actually. Tested it shortly after release. if you don't fight, it doesn't progress, you end up losing the battle in whichever room you didn't fight in.

another thing to note: progress bars. watch them. next time you have Tractor-Pull or Jack in the Box. (actually, if you can get a team together to run it multiple times that's probably the best way to test this..)

Here's what you need t o know: Tractor Pull also progresses faster if someone on the team is killing the NPCs while you're pulling.

means there's a "kill mechanic" at work here. I've actually been left alone by NPCs in Tractor Pull by not firing, but it didn't unlock the door at the same speed that it progressed when we've had a free player out there killing mobs.

in tractor pull it's not exactly a requirement, but in Jack in the Box, it most certainly IS.
Okay, that information is good to know. And something they really need to fix in the player side communiction.
