I personally think changing the game's engine to something a little more modern instead if constantly upping the minimum requirements would be a better option...
I am all for an updated game engine, but the reasoning above makes no sense. Any new game engine is going to use DX11 or higher anyway, as well as requiring a recent GPU.

DX9 is over a decade old. (Last update: v9.0c in 2004)
Most other game engines are also FAR better optimized, which means they run better with less resources used.

You got that right. I been gaming since the Atari 2600 and I hate retro games. Can't stand blocky graphics and 8 bit looks.

My favorite game is still the original version of PONG I got for Xmas in 1975.
Doesn't get any boxier than that.

    B)

Zork 1 was fun. Granted I didn't play it on the commodore but still enjoyed it.

No argument there. STO's engine is... weird. I've seen it put load on the GPU on static screens.

hopefully this might cure the blank screens and crashes to desktop with direct3d errors I have been having since the lighting update was applied but I wont hold much hope or count my chickens on that happening.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

ok i'll make an exception for Pong. Game was so basic yet it's still playable today. And text based games oh ya, good times. The 1st time I played Zork was on a TRS-80. As we're talking about text based games my 1st Star Trek game was played on that same TRS-80. Yup I been a Trekkie since the Original series aired. Although i don't believe i started watching til season two came out. Trying to recall when my parents bought our first TV, black & white btw. lol And yes i'm that old. :)

    Pretty much.

You can download a program called GPU-Z to identify exactly which GPU you have and there is even a field that states up to what version of DirectX the hardware supports.

    https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

GPUs supporting DirectX 10 have been released back in 2007. DirectX 11 GPUs were released in 2009 (AMD) and 2010 (nVidia). If your PC predates 2007, then you have a problem.

I'm surprised at all the AMD complaints. I've got a Asus M11BB with an AMD A10-6700 CPU - Radeon HD8670 integrated card. Stock.

I rarely have problems outside of the brutal slow down in some Delta Patrols and their crappy sky boxes. Had issues in the latest feature too.

I don't run max settings or anything, but by and large it still looks good. And I rarely crash.

Before their update, I was able to run STO with almost all settings to the max. As I said before, the problem isn't the hardware, since it used to work just fine. It's all about their broken update.
Have you logged a support ticket? Clearly it's working fine for other people, such as myself, so the hard part is isolating why it's affecting you. And yes, your system is a part of that equation, both the hardware and software, drivers, etc.

Considering that it was able to handle most settings at max and considering that it does support DirectX 11, with Direct3D 11 level feature 11 (as mentioned in the new requirements), I'd hardly call that card "low-end".

I have filed many tickets in the past and they've never been answered. So, what's the point? Also, having been a QA tester in the past, if you don't provide the devs with specific circumstances about the crash, they won't be able to pinpoint the problem. And since the game crashes on me at just about any moment, regardless of where I am or what I'm doing... And this, only since their latest update. It was very stable before.

TY for that link. However it says I'm running DX 11 but Win 10 via dxdiag says I'm running 12
GPU-Z shows what your card is physically capable of. In this case it's reporting that you have a DX11 card.

dxdiag on Windows 10 shows DX12 because that's the API version in Windows 10. DirectX is backwards compatible; so Win10 can still use DX11 cards, just without any of the DX12 features.

tl;dr: You're still fine as far as STO is concerned. ;)

Ah ok TY been ages since I messed around with moding or building my one systems. Lke way back when win95 came out. LOL. I just am not into it anymore. I picked this system up 3 years ago and not ready to replace it yet.

Of the 7xxx series the 7350 is the lowest of the series. Because it's newer then the previous series 6xxx has no bearing on performance. If a vid card has 4 numbers the 1st number is the series and the last 3 indicate how well they will perform with the higher numbers performing the best. So a 7870 is more powerful and it fact it's about 15.5 times more powerful. The 7990 btw is 19 times more powerful. My GTX 970 being 30.5 times more powerful but it is almost 3 1/2 years newer then the rebranded 6350 (7350).

The 7350 can do 3d but it's not really designed for gaming. That's not to say it can't do it. It's just the basic entry model that does dx11. btw the 7350 is just a rebrand of the 6350 as were all the models from 7670 and below. The 7730 and above used the newer CGN 1st gen architecture whereas the 7670 and below used the Terrascale2 architecture from the 6xxx series. If you can play the game that's most excellent. I think an upgrade is warranted soonish though. Sorry, I had to side with freeman as he was correct in his description. Nothing personal, facts are just facts.

No argument there. STO's engine is... weird. I've seen it put load on the GPU on static screens.

STO's Cryptic Engine is in use since the very first Game that they ever released, City of Heroes and that was Released in April 2004! in other words, that Engine is a nearly 13 Years old utterly outdated DINOSAUR :s

sure they expanded, updated added new Feutures and so on to the Engine, but at its Core its still that old geezer of an Engine, i so wish they would decide to go with a Modern Engine, either License an allready avaible one like CryEngine 5, Unreal Engine 4 OR any other somewhat Modern engine, anything better than that antique engine that they still use, OR maybe work on an Cryptic Engine 2? they developed the First one, if they still have what it takes to Develop a new engine that would also be an Idea.

    Ever since i saw THIS

i was hoping to one day being able to Play STO with such Graphics, not that iam expecting it, yet it would be so awesome O_O

Ok, first of all, I don't know anything about this kind of stuff.

But after I got the warning that the 9-thingy won't be supported anymore, I changed it to the 11-thingy in my graphics settings and now the game crashes while loading.

Which means I cannot revert back to the 9-thingy, and that I will probably have serious problems accessing the game as, apparently, the only alternative that should work in the future instantly results in a crash.

I know how to fix the issue for now and get back to the 9-thingy settings, but how am I supposed to keep playing once that thing won't be supported anymore?

Hopefully Cryptic will figure out the issues with DirectX 11 by the time March 1st, 2017 rolls around.

If they can't fix the problem, then they need to postpone the "Obsolescence Day" until they do fix the issue. Otherwise, they run the risk of alienating a potentially large percentage of the STO community which means a significant drop in the player base and a lot of lost revenues.

There are two things involved with DirectX for any version... software drivers and hardware (the graphics card itself).

Windows 10 is shipped with DirectX 12 drivers. In fact DirectX 12 is only compatible with Win 10 and it cannot be installed in Win 7 or Win 8. The graphics card or integrated graphics core is the hardware side of the equation. A graphics card must be designed to be able to take advantage of the DirectX 12 drivers. Installing a graphics card that only has DirectX 9 support in a Windows 10 computer means that you cannot play games that requires a DirectX 10 or 11 compatible graphics card, and forget about DirectX 12 games.

If you just bought the computer then the graphics card or integrated graphics core it comes with will support DirectX 12... unless you bought a unopened computer manufactured in 2006... which technically still counts as "new" since it has never been owned by anyone before. I doubt you purchased an old "new" PC. Provide a link to the PC you purchased and I'll take a look at it.

The rig I have is Windows 10 with 4GB Ram and ATI Radeon HD 3000 integrated. So I should be fine. (Any graphics card I would get though would have to fit in a PCI-e x1 slot.)
