Cruiser loadouts for PVE DPS?

I'm a bit confused about the Cruiser. I want to play DPS, but I prefer the Cruiser design w/ heavy on beams using broadside strategy. However, I think I'm using the wrong BO abilities. What abilities should I be using? I don't tank and I don't like the escorts, but so far all the advice I have read suggests either building a tank or flying an escort. :(

Put your build there. As far as BO abilities if you have a cruiser you should definitely have tactical team. then a form of Beam Fire At Will aka BFAW and if you can fit it an attack pattern. Once you show the forums your build we can offer more assistance.

Here is my current build but I don't know how this will help. I was thinking there should be best practices when building a ship, that's all I was asking. http://skillplanner.stoacademy.com/?build=noobcruiser_0

I get my gear from episodes, and I'm still on the Klingon War series. In the beginning I was getting upgrades to everything, but lately nothing good.

    DPS, no.
    Fun, serious fun indeed.

I have a support cruiser on my fed-rom with this loadout (SC/turret). Loads of fun and despite what you may expect, it is quite viable in PVE if you're a decent pilot.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

2 Arrays fore, 2 Arrays aft.

Tac: Fire At will 1, this is your DPS.
Eng: EPtW1/EPtW2, 30s duplicate ability cooldown, 30s duration, keep this active.
Eng: Engineer Team 1 (Hull Heal), big hull heal.
Sci: Science Team 1 or Transfer Shield Strength 1, big shield heal or bigger shield heal over time.

Beamboat DPS in general, you want FAW for damage, EPtW to keep Weapon Power up and buff your damage, and (when you get more Tac slots) Attack Pattern Beta/Omega.

Later cruisers you'll be able to have 2xEPtS and 2xEPtW constantly firing, and that's referred to as a Dragon build.

Say, this guy won a medal. Is this the preferred build? http://skillplanner.stoacademy.com/?build=andayaltcmd_3381

Is there someplace where I can find builds like this? If it's called a "dragon" build, does that mean it's been documented somewhere? (perhaps something like noxxic for STO?)

p.s. I really wish I could "like" posts.

    Yes, yes there is.

That link, also in my signature, has not only one of the most comprehensive wikis in the game about how to actually use things, what things to use, and when, but also showcases some great builds that use them and coincidentally has a place where you can ask for help.

Edit: Also, I wouldn't go by stoacademy medals. It's a great site to use for sharing builds, but I've seen a lot of good builds without medals and a lot of medals on poor builds.
    SCM - Crystal C. (S) - [00:12] DMG(DPS) - @jarvisandalfred: 8.63M(713.16K) - Fed Sci

    SCM - Hive (S) - [02:31] DMG(DPS) - @jarvisandalfred: 30.62M(204.66K) - Fed Sci

    Tacs are overrated.

Tom's a real cool cat, so I always give his builds medals cause they're Tom's builds.
Jerry's always stealing my cheese, I hate that, I'll never give any of his builds a medal.
