-th consoles broken?

mscowboymscowboy Member Posts: 231 Arc User
So I got a shiny new threat decreasing console from my embassy hoping it would give my BoP a free ticket to do what it wants and jumped into Cure to try it out.

Everything wanted me dead.

While I used to be able to fly around under a cube for a while without provoking it, they now attack me as soon as I fly in range. Even when they were already targeting someone else, they switch to me without me firing a shot at them.

Negh'vars and raptors gun for me as soon as they see me.

Even during firefights where everyone is attacking the same thing they happily try to murder me and only me.

It's far worse than it was before I got the "threat reducing" console. Did you just copy and paste the stats for the threat increasing console? Is anyone else having this problem?

Does the item's description say "decrease threat" or "threat control"?

These are two very different things.

Are you sure you got a threat reducing console instead of the threat augmenting one?

initial agro is kinda weird in stfs. theres been times where in CSE the tac cube gets face pulled and some how I have agro on it when ive been 15k+ away from it the entire time. However, ive got 2 of the -th consoles on one toon and 3 on another and I could immediately tell a huge difference when those were equipped. I'm pulling a whole lot less threat from dps. They really do help... course if everyone in your group has them, well =p

Well, I've done some more testing in Infected and these things work very strangely. They most certainly need to be worked on.

The moment I came into range of the initial cube it went for me, before I provoked it, but as soon as the others joined in I wasn't able to keep aggro. From there I wasn't really able to see it doing anything.

For a while it seemed as though it was lowering my threat generation but simultaneously making me far more noticeable. I couldn't steal aggro from others in the sphere phase, but anything that wasn't specifically being shot by someone else went straight for me, and everything new that warped in was on me first and chased me down until someone else got around to shooting it.

That theory went out the window when the gate and tac cube at the end both went after me despite the whole team focus firing, with only one other person on the team able to occasionally draw the aggro. Perhaps I managed to get into games where everyone else (including engineers in cruisers and carriers) were running even MORE -th consoles than me, or were using mk I weapons or something, but I got this console so I could slip by unnoticed and from what I can see it does not work AT ALL.

Threat generation: That means not your initial threat is lowered, but the one you generate by firing upon a target is reduced. Meaning its easier for other players to steal your enemys attention, because they generate more threat than you, even if you have a higher dps output.

Even so, my initial threat seems to be much higher. I used to be able to coast by cubes without provoking them, and I certainly wasn't the only target for every new ship warping in. I'm very noticeably being singled out by everything whose aggro isn't being specifically stolen by others, and it was never like that without the console.

Edit: Just played khit and had to laugh. I was right, someone on left summoned a cube but left it alone. It took me as its target from across the map and flew all the way across just to get to me.

Was this in a pug? You are sure the other players weren't running [-Th] too? Those embassy consoles are currently pretty much the best thing to put into a sci slot, I have 3 myself.

ya this where great for dps players for 1-2 days.... and they work fine.

Then every idiot engi cruiser that pugs decided they should put 2-4 of them in there cruiser sci slots... ya as an escort / bop with 1-3 sci slots we are pretty much hosed in Pugs cause chances are even the engi are running them.

I put 4 in a fed tac sci, and I was in one match where a Cat box carrier obviously had at least as many as I did cause I stole his argo with in seconds on everything. lol

Where can I get me some of these consoles without being part of some impersonal uber fleet?
We only have a few active members in our tiny fleet and it's going to take a long time before we have enough dilithium to unlock anything useful.
    Are they available anywhere else?

Mk X are the first tier... and really all you need the mk x are about = to mk xii blue sci consoles + the bonus threat increases or reductions. They are not that hard for even 1 person to unlock in a few weeks of work.

I really wish there were something in the UI to show exactly what your threat modifier is. I bought two of the embassy consoles- a graviton and a particle, one with the shield proc and one with the hull proc, but I got one [+Th] and one [-Th] in the hopes that they'd more or less cancel each other out. Then I actually looked at their stats.

They appear to be different values- the [+Th] is 120% while the [-Th] is 60%. Plus I have spent some skill points on threat, too- what does a 54 in Threat Control translate to as a percentage modifier? Is it 154%? 127%? Does all this modify the base value? I'd like to know.

It would certainly be useful to see the actual math behind it. Just like it would be useful to see the math behind most other things in game.

    *le sigh*

Maybe Cryptic should make the -threat consoles only usable by tactical captains. The things you mentioned pretty much defeat the whole purpose of these consoles while engineers still don't do what they are supposed to do: aggro and tank everything.

So just for the slow people like me, are we sure the -/+Threat stack? And how do they stack, like Tac consoles for dmg or diminishing returns? Sorry Im a bit confused with all the different threads and posts on this subject. And I agree, it would be helpful if Cryptic would be more clear in how Threat is actually calculated.

I have an interest in the -Th for my TAC, but also for the +TH for my Eng/Cruiser in PVE.

Cryptic seems adamant in that they do not want to incentivize tanking, ever.

I believe the only Sci console that is not available with a +Threat modifier is the Field Generator.

So now your choice is to generate more threat (and no one was skilling threat control outside of PvPers or the tiny handful of Players who actually do want to tank) and lose Shield points per facing by the thousands.

Or your other choice is to get a free damage proc, and generate less threat.

Guess which one is the the undisputed favorite of all terrible PUG queue players (98% of the PUG queue population)?

Well, then the solution to this problem is actually very simple: Either make -threat consoles only available to tactical captains (as I already suggested) or Cryptic should offer +threat (and ONLY the +threat variant) field generators.

Well I think making a Sci console available only to Tac captains is not good design either (and no gear in the game functions this way aside from kits).

On the other hand, they should have split the consoles up into {survivability / +threat} and {sci stuff / -threat}.

I'd also like to see stronger damage procs on the +Threat vs. the -Threat as well as {+Threat Field Generators} with no {-Threat Field Generators}.

Oh I like that. Make your tank stronger but make more mobs mad at you while sci or tac get to work its ninja magic from the shadows.

The whole point of the threat consoles is you can choose whether you want to draw aggro or not. Giving any kind of advantage to +threat would undermine that premise.

Encouraging clueless players to draw more aggro than they can handle does not help anyone.
