Hello I have a character that when I try to log into my game crashes.

I guess you would call him my "main" first character i created and most of unlocks are done with him. When I log into them the game crashes and I am forced to restart. I can log into other characters but not this one. Any assistance would be appreciated.

That's a sign that your install is corrupt. Try verifying files if such a thing exists on console, and if that doesn't work, purge the entire install and redownload.

Would i lose any gameplay progress ie lock box ships etc?

Your game status is saved on the server, not on your console, so you should be fine.
I've re-installed on PC a few times and never had anything disappear, so I'd imagine that consoles work the same.
