Ahead of the Saturday night world premiere of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine documentary What We Left Behind, a new image from the doc was released featuring a new starship.
USS Emmett Till
Unveiled at the What We Left Behind premiere at Destination Star Trek in Birmingham, UK, was the “USS Emmett Till.” The ship is featured in an animated sequence in the doc, based on a new story that emerged from the segment where five of the show’s original writers reunite to break the story for a theoretical eighth season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Today’s official press release states What We Left Behind “boldly goes where no documentary has gone before… introducing a new starship into the Star Trek canon.”

    Cool looking ship.

Pretty much every time a 'would you like to see this ship added' thread comes up my vote is usually yes.

Even if I don't personally want it, many people would and ship sales keep the game funded so the more options... the better. This ship however, I would have an interest in. I dig the design.

It is as canon as this ship and we still got it in STO.

There’s a good chance we may see it in game:
“The starship was designed by concept illustrator John Eaves, known for his work on many of the Star Trek series’ and feature films, with the team announcing that a physical collectible model of the ship is already in the works in partnership with Eaglemoss’ Star Trek Official Starship Collection.”

Canon and STO are strange bedfellows when it comes to ships.

The dewan hairbrush tailed bubble ships for example. Or the extreme mash-ups (mash togethers) used for fed miracle worker.

The till looks interesting with the boxy lines of the hull and saucer thats kind of like the nx-1 era enterprise. Pylons maybe a bit long but probably depends on the viewing angle.

Darn sight better than the intergalactic pizza cutter, though thats not hard to achieve.

As I said in another thread, if we have the NX Refit that was supposed to be shown in Season 5 of Enterprise, then it is likely that we will see this ship.

My issue was with the quote i referenced about introducing a new ship into the canon when in fact it's not canon.

Depends if CBS or whoever introduces things into star trek canon have said it is.
But i doubt they would be allowed to say its a canon ship if it wasn't.

That sure is an...interesting ship design. Them nacelles though? Wondering what the provenance of this is. Where does it stand within the Starfleet timeline, what is the design rationale of this hull, did it have a specific role, which was reflected in the aesthetics, or did some draftsman at Utopia Planitia Ship Yards just let his hair down one day and decided to go full-crazy on the drawing board?

I appreciate that, but it's possible we may get an incarnation of this ship in STO,

"Speaking of Star Trek Online, it seems the Star Trek MMORPG is interested in bringing the Emmett Till into its timeline as the game’s official Twitter account made sure its lead starship artist, Thomas Marrone, was aware of the new ship’s debut."

[Mod Hat] It's a cool ship, but it's not screen canon and therefore it's Never Gonna Happen(tm) in game. Per Frequently Created Threads:

Can we have fan-designed ships or ships of other Star Trek licensees in the game?

    No.
    • For ships from other Star Trek licensed properties, for example Star Trek: Starfleet Command, the tabletop RPGs by FASA or Last Unicorn Games, or any original ships Pocket Books' novel writers may invent in the future, Cryptic has to negotiate for rights to each design individually with the other license-holder, as they did pre-launch with the Luna-class reconnaissance science vessel (Pocket Books' Star Trek: Titan) and Vesta-class multi-mission explorer (Pocket Books' Star Trek: Destiny). It's simply faster and cheaper for them to create their own original ships.
    • There are several fan-designed or fan-named ships already in the game, but the fracas that ensued over the "Design the Next Enterprise" contest has led the development team to decide against soliciting further such designs. There has been one further competition since then to design what became the Jupiter-class carrier, but it involved variations of developer-made designs.

Any ship that appeared in a Star Trek TV show or film is still potentially fair game.
Even though it was actual professional Star Trek artists who made the picture, it's still basically a fan design: they weren't working under a Paramount or CBS studio contract, they're doing it for an independently funded and produced documentary.

Since there's also a discussion thread for it in Ten Forward, I've moved and merged them here, rather than closing the thread like I normally would. Discussion of the ship design and the documentary can continue. [/Mod Hat]

Interesting, I hadn't seen that. I don't like the ship myself, it just looks to me like they tried to make a "TNG'd" Crossfield. I like the Cross but this just looks.... bad to me. I'm actually irritated that they hung Emmett's name on this because of how it looks to me. I have no problem with naming a ship, or class of ships, after Till, but IMO, this one is just ugly.

Emmett Till is certainly a politically charged name considering recent events. He is the very definition of a person whose life was destroyed by an accusation.

It is a good looking ship IMO and likely that we will eventually see it in STO. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

It's also up to CBS and Paramount to decide if the ship is canon or at the very least semi-canon. The content that would be seen in the documentary would probably be at least beta-canon (also known as semi-canon) if not alpha-canon.

That said, I really like the ship design. Definitely would like to see it in STO at some point.

There might be a slight difference in the level of canon for a cancelled season that had part of its story developed while the show was still running and What If Season that was developed 20 years after the show was finished.

Still looks to me like some kind of kitbash between a Sojourner-class Operations Star Cruiser and a Sagittarius-class Temporal Cruiser.
