trennan, they don't know which you'll choose. If they only had 1 option per faction they could do it that way. But you are supposed to have 3. If they set all 3 to be free upgrade then anyone who buys them would get a free upgrade as well, which cryptic does not want. Even if they only had 1, the problem of free upgrades for purchasers would exist unless they took away the ability to purchase these ships, which would not be well received.

I mean, I'm not complaining. Just pointing out they could do it. The easiest way, would have been to give a free bound to character upgrade token when you hit level 61. But, I'm not worried about it. There's finally a promotion sci ship for the KDF.

Easiest way to have done this would be to create a ship choice box, similar to the infinity boxes with the specific ships they wanted to give away. Tweak the ships to remove store flags they may have applied to them and have them already at t5u when the claim is made.

Might have taken a bit longer but a modest amount of effort would have allowed them not to be accused of pulling a fast one or lying about rewards etc etc etc

Frame works are already in the game for something like this to be done so it seems more like a case of we didn't have time because we thought it'd be simple and put it off to the last minute.... oops sorry lol we'll go hide in our shelter now until the stormfront passes over.

The original article definitely had it that we were getting an Upgraded T5U at Lvl 61 and that article has since been retconned. So does anyone know why they changed it?

They explained it in the stream. From what I remember, the original plan was when a character hits level 61, they would get a T5 ship and an upgrade token for that ship (and that ship only). However it turned out to be something of a technical challenge to limit the upgrade token to that one ship only, so they scrapped the idea.

I'm not seeing the big issue here. Is it really significant which ship gets upgraded? As long as they make the token character/account bound, like the vet reward, and non-tradable what is Cryptic losing? One of the points of VIL for me is the level cap increase and getting players an edge up past the last free T5 ships earned prior to VIL to prepare for level 65 mobs. Or am I missing something?

Free upgrade tokens per character are very easy to abuse even if they're bound to charcter. Ship upgrades are account wide unlocks, if character 1 upgrades a ship with a token then character 2-50 can upgrade it for free. So one could make a bunch of characters, doff till 52, do the admiratly till 61 and upgrade pretty much all ships he/she has without spending anything besides a couple minutes per character. And considering how convoluted and technically eleborate the alternatives would be I can understand why they scrapped that. Still should be better communicated though...

Valid point and the part I was missing was that ship upgrades were account unlocks. I haven't played much with upgrades (only upgraded one T5 Vesta and Vet ships which upgrade for free) and when T6s came out there was little point in considering other T5 ships again. If I'm not mistaken, originally every ship was supposed to be upgraded individually but that got changed after complaints, but I was still in the former state of mind. Changing to the latter state of mind I can see how the upgrade token would be quite a bit more useful and be used to exploit the system. I was ambivalent about Cryptic's decision to pull the token since I wasn't going to use it anyways, but at least now that decision makes more sense to me.

And how exactly is this a "technical problem"? Seriously, how? I mean every T5 ship in the Phoenix pack comes with a upgrade, all you have to to is click upgrade on the ship. One that you can't use on any other ship.
No, they don't come with an upgrade token. None of those ships ever needed an upgrade token in the first place.

    Waste of effort, that.

guess I need to try qo'nos or something cause my 65 kdf'hadar cant claim anything in the shipyard at ds9 or dqc.

The problem i'm faced with is that i probably already have all the available ships with said token.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

They're the T5 c-store retrofits. If you already own them the token doesn't do much for you. Consider that though from the perspective of someone else. It's a 2500 zen freebie (minus the consoles...in some cases.)

I know this is going to sound kind of snide and nasty with the "law of internet," but please understand that's not my intention at all. I'm not intending any tone, just being honest. I play games so I can get rewards and enjoy things, not for other people to get rewards. What others can get doesn't really matter to my experience, unless it's some kind of fleet unlock.

It's especially frustrating since this could have been handled in several, far better ways that would offer everyone at least something. Just a handful of potential ideas:
    - Make the token apply to any dilithium purchasable ship
    - Make the token apply to T5 fleet ships
    - Add the various give-away T5 ships no longer available to the purchasable rewards
    - Add a variant of a ship to the shipyard only purchasable with this token, can be an existing ship with just different console layout
    - Make the token apply to any C-store T5

Not really, as it would be a system they could then adapt for future events like anniversary giveaways and also avoid taking flak from removing something they pushed as a level up reward.

would be nice if they gave everyone One, bound to account Upgrade Token and say "sorry, our mistake, have this on us". Instead they said "oops", edited the news post, and quickly changed the subject. Not a good way to build player goodwill :(

This all falls under "subject to change before release".

Very true and that's why I haven't made to much of a stink about it. The issue is the lack of being forward about why they have changed it. It's only come out via a livestream. It's no great loss as no-one actually has lost anything because they didn't have it in the first place and as I had most of the ships already and am LTS, I have a spare token for the one ship I didn't have
