If you want to go straight to Mk XIV Epic from any Mark and Rarity in one upgrade, you have to use an Ultimate Tech Upgrade. Which is only available when Cryptic are selling 20-pack bundles of Master Keys, where each pack has one account-bound Upgrade with it.

Other than that, your best bet is an Omega Particle Tech Upgrade with an Research Upgrade Accelerator applies to a Mark II Very Rare item (usually crafted, or lockbox pack opened on a low-level character). Very good chance of rolling to Epic then, as the lower the Mark the higher chance of a quality upgrade, and the less points needed per Mark increase so you get many Mark increases with one Omega, each with a solid chance of increasing rarity. Unfortunately, if it fails to Upgrade to full Epic, which will happen on occasion, you're probably better off to just toss the item on the Exchange than continuing to roll it, at least if your only goal is Epic. If it succeeds, upgrade it to Mk XIV using less valuable upgrades, like Phoenix or 'Superior' crafted ones. You can grind out Omega parts during certain special Events, but right now you have to buy 3x Omega Fragment (or the parts to make them, but usually cheapest to buy the final tradeable form) to craft the Omega Particle Upgrade (these are Account Bound).

I should clarify the question asked, not made as in literally crafted, but items upgraded to Epic quality regardless of the method used.

Everything with a mk & quality indicator can. Currently mk14/epic is the highest but once the upcoming expansion hits the limit will be bumped up to mk15/epic.

Don't some items start at Mk12 though?
I upgraded a few of my TR-116bs to Mk14 so they'd do extra damage to the Borg.

With items such as those, we don't get the option of starting low level to work on getting them into Epic quality.

pryor detailed the slow way, just keep hitting it with Upgrades until it increases in rarity. It's worth considering the cost to benefit of using higher rarity chance upgrades (Omega and Experimental) versus just cycling with lower end upgrades (Romulan Admiralty, standard Superior, Phoenix, etc.) after the first few rolls, as the percent chance can only be equal or higher, so something like 25-33% it might be less costly to just try again at that or slightly higher rarity chance with each pass of cheaper Upgrades.

The Ultimate Tech Upgrades I mentioned will take anything upgradeable to Mk XIV Epic, even if it's XII, or XIV.

I'm still not exactly sure what your original poll was supposed to be asking, so I'm wondering if part of it got lost at some point before I saw it.

I'm not very skilled at gathering Omega particles, so I just donate those to a friend who likes them more then I do.
I played around with Experimental upgrades, but as I have only dabbled with Epic upgrading, I am not fully experienced in the most efficient way to do this.

Yes, part of the poll was lost in composition.
As I'd never posted a poll before, I tried to preview it and accidentally posted it instead.
So the revision I was intending to write to make the question more accurate/specific never got modified.

The question that I am asking is if players upgrade their gear to Epic Quality.

As I enjoy making a build, getting the right mixture of skills/items/sets is more important to me. I tend to not worry about getting "epic". If I am using a rep gear, it is not going to be very efficient to get the items to epic along with being extremely costly.

Also I tend to be a bit slower in getting all the set up right; recently I just redid all of my capital skill trees (how long has the new skill tree been out :# ). I do believe that playing casually, upgrading the gears to the maximum should make you competitive at the end game.
If you are trying to get the maximum build efficiently, at that point trying to get epic and mixing sets (shudder ;) ) is more likely a must!

Yes. I upgrade everything to epic. I even throw out any tribbles that aren't epic (the tribbles are somewhat of an exaggeration).

I upgrade my Targ to Epic... :D:D

Walks out the airlock after that sad joke..But seriously..Just upgrade the TRIBBLE outta everything possible..But be advised if there is a balance change in bound you need to be ready to adapt the setup..I know I had to discard alot of epic stuff last year with S13..

When I upgrade, which is rare, I go for MK XIV and that's it. I have gotten lucky on a few items and had them go Epic, but I'm not such a stickler for rarity. Most of my upgraded stuff is MK XIV Very Rare and that's as far as it will go. At least until the new MK XV stuff goes live with Victory is Life. And the eventual increase to MK XVI and so on.

I won't waste resources on trying to get those last few percentage points by increasing the rarity.

There are certain things that are a MUST to EPIC quality, simply because you gain an additional modifyer or 2, like Deflectors, Very Rare will have 3 Mods, EPIC will have 5..... Thus 40% more powerful. ( worth it )
Weapons that are re-engineerable, Very Rare 3 mods, EPIC 6 mods ( worth it )
Tac, Eng, Sci consoles ...... Very Rare to EPIC gains 0.8 power ( not worth it )
Dont even try to upgrade a Common or just Rare item unless you buy that EPIC token they are talking about, you will wind up with a bunch of Uncommon MK14 gear filling up your inventory space.

This post contains some very bizarre and ultimately very incorrect math. Anyone considering an upgrade path should ignore this advice.

What does '.08' power even mean? Upgrading a Locator from Mark XII UR to Mark XIV Epic gets you a 5% damage boost and a 1% critical chance.. per console. You don't have to be a mathematician to understand that if you have 4 or 5 of these, upgrading them to Epic is a big boost.

Also, the assessment that adding 2 mods makes an item '40% more powerful' is just too ridiculous of a statement to even address.
    Insert witty signature line here.

I'd have to agree..Some consoles will give you a real kick up..Plus the consoles are more easily upgradeable owing to the low amount of tech points needed to get it to the next mark..I stocked up on DIL bought a TRIBBLE load of Phoenix upgrades (Well over 200) waited for the upgrade weekend to come along and had upgrades equal to over 100000 tech points and I got all consoles to MK 14 without a sweat and suprisingly easily got them to epic by chance..NOTE: Consoles require much lesser amount of tech points to upgrade opposed to weapons and ship equipments (Rather anything above the Device slots require way more tech points and everything below the device slots require way less tech points..) All I have left on my main is to get the weapons to epic and thats about it till ViL drops..

Each 10 phoenix pack cost 45K dil..That aone equalled to quite a bit of tokens (UC/R/VR/UR unfourtunately never got an epics) to get well over 200 upgrades..Next time it rolls around I will take a count of the number of tokens..The only investment is DIL and nothing more to buy the packs which in my opinion is reasonable opposed to the 1K Dil each time for an ultra low number of tech points from standard upgrade token..

I generally upgrade consoles and the shield. I'm good with UR on everything else.
