of course you get more XP, but does your expertise so you can train officers accelerate as well?

Does it matter? I've only ever run out of expertise when leveling up and switching back and forth between ship types and giving my crew more skills than they really needed. Skip any one of those and it should be fine.

Just do some doffing if you think you're running low.

mostly concerned with up to 10, when you don't have doffing or anything

That's only a few hours even without boosts, so just look at it as a challenge.
