Returning player, somehow I managed to get to level 60 without ever doing much ship combat. I'm trying one of the so-called "tutorial missions" right now and after a loooong battle I finally managed to destroy ONE enemy ship. Which turned out to be a frigate.
In the meantime I was destroyed several times by the other ships, which are battleships...
So obviously something is wrong.
If I read this correctly, my Defense Rating for the ship is 15 - which seems ridiculously low, so I'm guessing every (PVE) enemy is hitting me 100%.
For some reason I didn't really find any threads (or anything on google) that explained "Defense rating" - did I search wrong, or is it because it's not really a useful value?
Is there something simple and obvious I'm missing, maybe?

I'm quite sure I'm playing on normal, but the gear is definitely below Mk 12.
So I'm going to read up a bit, and throw some (in-game) money at the problem before I try again.
[edit] Throwing some money at the ship definitely helped. It still feels like either I'm doing everything completely wrong, or this is not an easy beginners mission (despite being marked tutorial). It's "Empire Defense Against Cardassian Aggression" (I'm playing a klingon) btw.
OH.... those guys.....be careful not to aggro the ships that are off the edge of the screen with things like Beam Fire at Will and Torp Spread and Cannon Scatter Volleys. Because every last one of them will be on your TRIBBLE.
BTW, I think of "Defense Rating" as the thing that causes the enemy shooting at you to miss hitting you with their weapons.

Aha, the spoons. They are one of the opponents which like to use torpedo spread quite often.
Make sure you keep your shields up and grab an deuanium or neutronium console.

Later in the game with better shields and overall gear the engineering consoles are obsolete, but while leveling they can be quite useful.
As for the Mk level of the weapons, it is nonsense that you NEED Mk. 12 or above.
The endgame content in the game is easy enough to run through with white Mk. 8 or 10 gear providing you possess a bit of skill. Skill is acquired by practice
I was just about to bite through my keyboard - again - because space combat always follows the same pattern for me:
Enter zone
Enemies abound
I'm being shot at
Shield is gone
I frantically try to turn and/or restore shield while returning fire (which apparently means either always hitting space, or setting each weapon individually to auto fire?)
I die because a dozen enemies are pounding me from all sides while I can't even hit a single target, or do any damage whatsoever
Yay...
[edit]Seriously, I'm trying to like this game, but I get the feeling the game doesn't like me.
[edit]Right. Forget this thread, I just uninstalled the game. I don't think I'll ever like it. Whereever you go, everyone is gushing about how great space combat is, and all I can think is "WTFH?".
People talk about how you're supposed to pass your enemy and turn around and whatnot. Whenever I try this, I only get away from one enemy to get close to two others.
Maybe if I had some time to think or get used to the commands, but as I said, it's usually over in about 10 seconds during which I have no time to think because all I can think of is "hit the repair button hit the repair button!!"...
Maybe if there way a way to lower the difficulty, or play a lower levelled mission...
I don't entirely agree that white Mk 8 or 10 gear is all you need for end game content. With experience it may be workable but why struggle to complete things when Mk 12 rare is dirt cheap and Mk 12 very rare as well as some nice sets are available through missions and mission replay.
It does take some practice but positioning, weapons buffs, debuffing and/or controlling the enemy, shield and hull heals, power levels, your spec, gear/set synergies, boff abilities and when to use them all come into play. In something like a BOP or escort your defense rating will help even in PvE as a portion of damage will miss you so keep moving. Heck anything at full stop will guarantee that everything will hit you, although I agree that defense most likely doesn't play a large part with what you're experiencing.
Best advice (mentioned above) would be to post a link to your build using the skill planner at stoacademy.com/ to get some feedback. The modifiers on you weapons aren't too important but include gear and mark/rarity, spec, and boff abilities.
Don't get frustrated, get help There's a build section in the forums here
Edit: Here's a link to a jack of all trades spec I use for new toons for hopping from science ship to cruiser to escort.
You can add me in game @odinforever20000 Ill walk through the game with ya when im in.
