Q's Winter Event

It's supposed to start on December 7th. If I missed last year's ship, is it possible to get it this year, at all?

I think it will be November 30.

The Phoenix prize packs (introduced relatively recently, they're a limited time item available from the Dilithium store tab) offer a very slim chance of earning old event ships.

So, if you care about this sort of thing: schedule your STO time wisely and complete the ship this year. It's an account unlock, and you won't [realistically] be able to change your mind about wanting event ships later.

That said, if you slotted the project from last year (and have yet to complete it) then I think you should be able to finish it with the current year's marks (new marks can be used for old projects, though old marks can't be used for new ones). If you want the next event ship too (and why wouldn't you? It's a free ship) then you will need to grind for that one as well on a separate character (to avoid the daily activity's 20hr cool down.)

If you weren't on then, failed to slot the project, or canceled it, you won't be able to reslot the old project this year (and the very, very low odds of the Phoenix packs will be your only hope.)

I think it will be November 30.

Unless it's moved to a Tuesday and it would come on 5th December, i think for something like this it seems an appropriate time to move forward a downtime cycle by two days. If not it's the 30th as you mentioned or the 7th December, but that would be slightly late for such an event.

Anyway, i'm just sticking to the 40 autographs and make the most out the event as much as possible by running it over 2 character to get a breen ship i failed to get the end of last year, but at that time i was in a really dark place mentally. I also want the one this year.

I might get into the snowballing of snowmen, but i won't do the event to collect tags. Bunny hoppers will always take advantage of a situation to cheat their fellow players out of their potential share.

I found the winter event boring the second year I did it, I don't think the third year will be any different for me sadly. :(

And if you really care about such things, forget STO and go play something where you haven't already missed on 5 years of "exclusive" events.

The issue isn't on Cryptic's end with this. I run this on a laptop, from the UK, and I do not suffer lag and that's with not running via a proxy!

Well wherever the problem is it only affected my game at the event hubs and doesnt affect the rest of the game or any of my other games which all seem to run fine on my alienware laptop and 80meg fibrebroadband.

Line speed has very little to do with it. I run it on a 10Mb connection from the UK quite smoothly and I don't get lag or rubberbanding. The main issue with the game is it's still a 32 Bit game, so isn't really optimised for 64 Bit machines. It would run much better if it did. Don't forget that Cryptic cannot emulate every possible combination of machines and actually has an easier time with the Console versions because they are only programming for 2 versions of machine rather than the millions of possible config of laptop and PC.

I see the calendar now and it looks like that is official. They pushed it back a week at the start and the end so I would say it is December 7th. That sounds good to me since they pushed it back to January 18 also.

I'm playing it on PS4. I've missed the Rezreth and the Krenim ship, mostly because I had no idea what the events were about.

Yea I surprised it usually starts close to Dec 1st or has in year's passing... The December Calendar now fixed seems to show it starting on the 7th this year following the Thursday Maintenance running to January 5th -- still 5 full weeks of Winter.

Hopefully Q has one or two new or exciting events planned and several new or exciting items for us to earn.

Over the last few years to 2011 it's usually been Dec 3rd and it usually ending somewhere around Jan 17th, give or take a few days on either end for margin of error. If it starts on Dec 7th, then it should run to Jan 18th.

Bunny hoppers will always take advantage of a situation to cheat their fellow players out of their potential share.

Bunny hopping, as much as I despise it, isn't cheating, it's using a (stupid) game mechanic. Jumping should just be slower than running. (That's not the reason I despise it though, it's just looking stupid and feeling stupid). Even worse is the Exo Armor, because why disable all traits and effects but allow for this one (either make it a pure level playing field skill contest, which I prefer, or allow for all kinds of shenanigans). Still not cheating.

So, to make this clear: I dislike (strongly) both of these mechanics, but I won't blame the players using them. Instead I will finish third and still get my tags, with the other race in the hour enough to grow an epohh friend.

you made my point for me, the very definition of cheating is by using dishonest or underhanded means to achieve something with the sole intention of not complying with the legitimate means that already exist in addition it robs another honest person of what could be rightfully theirs.

the fact you mention it's a stupid mechanic and one that clearly has been exploited so well by some instead of just running the course as they should only confirms how underhanded it is.

The definition of "legitimate" and "rightfully" being solely down to your idea of how the race ought to be played. Bunny hopping is part of the game's mechanics, that's simple statement of STO fact. It circumvents momentum just such as, for example, breaks do in F1. You might complain about how "well, if we only had to rely on aerodynamic drag then [some heavily circumscribed] idea of how racing should be will come out" but the question there is why one form is better than another.

And quite frankly you can't make that case. The race is still a race even if there's an interaction between jumping and running. It leads to a different kind of racing but it would be, quite frankly, silly to call that "dishonest" when the question here is simply that you're being dishonest with yourself. You're choosing not to apply a racing principle and complaining about the outcome as somehow being the fault of others. It's like (to go back to F1) choosing to run without downforce. You might think you're upholding the principles of "honest racing"," but what you're doing (in fact) is snubbing convention for the sake of a moral victory (built on the denigration of your fellow competitors.)

So why not just race? And if you really don't find that suitable then don't worry about it. This shouldn't be so severe an issue that comes down to flaming others [see. dishonest, cheating, underhanded, exploiting] for simply following along with the natural evolution of a winter activity (because the nicer alternatives are themselves the logical ones.)

The performance advantage of 64 bit for games (for most applications for that matter) is in memory address space, but STO doesn't get close to that ceiling, even in 32 bit Windows that has a lower cap because it ignores the NX bit. You don't see many games as old as STO or even several years newer get close to it without heavy moddability. Running in a 64 bit OS, 32 bit applications benefit from the additional system memory even if they're still on the old internal limit, and if you're not actually breaking that limit, a 32 bit build will perform better than a 64 bit one, even on a 64 bit CPU.

It's not "cheating" in that any and all players CAN do it. It's not a particularly fun or interesting way to go about doing things, but it's entirely within the rules. It's like winning a fighting game by spamming a certain move over and over. Cheating? No. Irritating way to go about things? YES.

I'm sitting here gigling about this issue, that comes to mind. I;m thinking what are all these new players going to say when they realize that finishing first in the "race" doesn't mean anything if you don't grab the flag at the end,

I wish we had a mission / weekend event or special winter episode created specifically by the Continuum that Featured if not Q himself - perhap's his son in the Star Trek Voyager episodes as well as in Real Life.

I'd LOVE to see a episode featuring Q Junior where he introduces some various Hijinks and Shenanigans.
