The problem with coming back to STO

tacofangs wrote: »

Edit: FWIW, I've never understood people's fixation that a given MMO should be the only thing they ever play for the rest of their lives. For my part, I will play an MMO for a while, then lose interest or get distracted by some other new game, go play that, and then come back to that MMO again.

We're here, we're free to play, and we're not going anywhere. Try something else for a bit, and then come back and give us another shot.
I left over a year ago then came back when I heard about the re-balance - which apparently drove plenty of people away.

This game still has plenty of issues like the humungous rep system and spaceship trait mess that's completely destroyed my will to level up new characters.

But whats worse are all of these time gated rewards that are impossible to get outside of phoenix events or, you know, actually being around to take part in... that event you've already done 30 or 60 or 90 times (or more depending on the number of characters you own.).

And if you come back mid season? When queues are dead and progress on old reputations becomes almost impossible, bah.

With all of this limited time gated content, actually returning to STO isn't a great experience, especially if you're unlucky.

Just sayin.

Good news! Some traits can now be claimed on other factions via the dil store!

None of that's different to any other MMO out there I know of. Not playing, not getting event or other reward items and your characters get "left behind" somewhat until you catch up and miss out on special events like Delta/Temporal etc.

Although almost all event rewards are now account unlocks, so you only have to do them once for all current and future characters you have and all reputation marks are available from Alerts and other content. You don't even need to run Advanced or Elite for Borg processors or whatever the "elite mark" item is for that Rep now. You don't even need to do Reputations beyond what you're going to actively use if you don't want to, and you must know fine well that completing one on any character allows you to do future ones much faster via sponsorship.

Just sayin', thanks for visiting, airlock's thataway.

I honestly don't play that many MMO's, maybe only EVE online and that sporadically at most. At least I can just look at whats on the market and see and purchase what I've missed.

And how often are these phoenix boxes? Every 3 months?

Meanwhile, lockbox ship traits, are bound to one character instead of an account. Do people really buy the same lockbox ship for multiple characters? Are the small % who do, worth the hassle?

And if you do decide to create a new character, are you knee capping yourself if you do it outside of the (temporal?) events?

I'm I wrong for feeling a little miffed by tacofangs insistence that STO is forgiving to those who come back?

Never got the "must copy and paste the same build across all my characters" lot myself re. Traits, surely the point of having multiples is to experience different playstyles as much as anything else ?

I'm sure there are people who spend 100s of millions of EC on the same lockbox ships multiple times, but they're crazy :)

If you've played through any or all of the recruitment events, you get a load of account unlocked rewards at level 20 on all others and more at certain points as you progress. You only needed to get a character to level 10 or so at the time the event was running to be able to complete it later. And Admiralty helps a lot when getting Primary and Secondary Specialisations filled on new characters.

I don't think there is a game that is more forgiving. You can hit level 60 in like a week. Reputation is a little harder to do, but you can get 65 marks per day for whatever rep by either doing Borg Red Alert or Tholian Red Alert, so it's really more a waiting game than having to get marks in the first place.

This is the only MMO that I play. And my best friend bought me the lifer during a sale (which is probably when the majority of people get one).

I have a ball playing how and where I want, but I still get 'burned out' with it sometimes and take breaks. I'm now coming back every few days to see what the Endeavor is. If it looks interesting? Sure, yeah, I'll do it.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.

Not for me. I sold an old non-running junk car for $300. :D

I'd say 90% - 100% of the time limited content is just "maybe nice to have."

Even with 10 alts I own many more than 10 T6 ships, so if I missed a free event ship that wouldn't ruin my game play.

The queue events almost always give a shiny that's interesting for flavor not "best in set," so there is no sane reason why you need to grind them for all your alts, or gnash your teeth if you miss them entirely.

The new weekend events have given an account-unlocked shiny (also just flavor), and the tokens have been usable with later events.

If there is something you decide you "must" equip on multiple alts, the Phoenix pack will return once or twice a year.

The rep system is easy to do for follow-up characters if you wait for one of the Mirror/Crystal/Shuttle etc. events so you can get 100+ marks in one queue run, while also earning one of those shinies. But why do you "need" the reps? Unless you want specific rep gear, and even then why equip everyone the same?

I'm not seeing a reason why a person "needs" to do any of the content.

Play what you enjoy doing when you feel like playing, don't be Gollum and obsess over the precioussss shinieses.

The only thing you miss while being away are some of the event ships that are only given away during a certain window of time. While those ships are cool to have and all, none of them are so important that if you miss them.. you're screwed. You're obsessing way too much over the items you missed, none of it is vital and you're not going to be at any type of disadvantage for not having those items.

I have left and returned to STO many times over the years and always found it to be the easiest of games to pick back up. Usually, after time away, it takes me a little bit to remember my controls and how I have everything set up, but usually I am able to just jump right back in. Star Trek Online is a pretty easy game overall and it's not hard at all to jump back in and be effective with only a small amount of effort.

    Insert witty signature line here.

That's why I said the majority of people. I figure there are some who can't wait for that sale and go ahead and plonk down the full price ;)

If the OP asked for assistance in how to progress with certain builds, it would become apparent that no individual rep or piece of gear is that crucial.

As for levelling alts you can always do it a low effort way: during double xp periods and by using it as a dil alt and passively let the thing progress. The 50-60 grind that was crazy has been slashed.

To do reputations just do the Red Alerts, they are both choose your own marks.

Still I have a radical idea, don't do the reputation on all your alts. Yep, that's right you really don't need to do every reputation on every alt. Just do the stuff you have fun with.

I'm not sure it would be worth it to come back after missing any significant amount of time.

Why? You can buy better than event ships for EC or zen. The event shinies are not best in set. The Delta/Temoral rewards just save time and dil. Nothing else expires, you don't "miss" anything.

Ah, another entitlement thread. Look OP, you're thinking the wrong way. None of the stuff that is time-gated is a problem to gain. Be thankful you have the opportunity to earn these things in a F2P game that is FREE! I'd like to see you complain to your boss that you shouldn't think your wages should be time-gated!
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

spaceship trait mess that's completely destroyed my will to level up new characters.

Truth is, you can have hundreds of ship traits, but will probably end up using the same 5-7 over and over. I have one trait loadout for if Im in a carrier mood, and one for non-carriers. Sure Im not a min/max player but I can join an advanced queue and pull my weight. Even the min/max brigade doesn't need to buy every ship.
