For me, the lockbox contents would be nice if the average person could have a better chance of getting the items they spent their hard earned money for. As it sits now, then NO. The lockboxes don't interest me because I don't like the gambling aspect. If I wanted to give away my money......I mean gamble on the lockboxes, I would go to the casino to give them my money.

As for the prizes that are in the lockboxes, I have lost complete interest in them because out of all the lockboxes I have ever opened, which numbered between 100-200, I only got 2 ships and neither of them were the ships I even wanted. All the rest of them, I got useless doffs and R&D packs. My idea for change to the lockboxes would be the minimum prize would be a Mirror Ship at the minimum or shuttle. The doff/R&D/boosts should be something that should be removed since we get enough of them as it is. Your average casual my spend 20-50 dollars a month on the game and not all of it could be going to lockboxes. Most of that could be going to dilithium so they can either upgrade items, help build up their fleet, or for the reputations.
Or their money could be going to buy a ship directly from the C-Store which has no gambling involved.

Plus isn't gambling for a prize not legal everywhere? If that is the case, then isn't it illegal for minors to be gambling as well?

As for the Tzenkethi, the books did describe them completely different than what we are getting in the game. If they say that the books don't count, then the Vesta should be removed since it was debuted in the Destiny trilogy books.

Never been a fan of the model really; some of the stuff inside the boxes is nice, though that fluctuates depending on which version (e.g., nothing in the [Sphere Builder Lock Box] really peaked my interest).

Putting aside whether gambling whales should be one of the main monetary support mechanisms for a game (much less a Star Trek game), honestly I'm not convinced that STO and PWE/Cryptic can keep relying on lockbox releases indefinitely. Eventually they're gonna run out of ships to make, meaning short of making ships for some rando new species that many players simply won't care about (see: Deferi), or starting all over again with T7 ships (which would tick a LOT of people off), what else do they have to offer to keep players interested, as well as handing over their money?

The "Gotta catch 'em all!" lockbox ship chase will get old at some point, so PWE/Cryptic need to come up with a good alternative option for gaining revenue if STO is to keep thriving in the future.

AFAIK, the Tzenkethi design for STO is based off of things said by one of the DS9 writers, the "heavily-armored lizards" thing. (That was in this show, right?) Which I'd personally take to be more correct than whatever was in the novels, which often contradict each other as well as other Trek properties. STO has always taken things from other soft-canon sources in a piecemeal fashion anyways (Mackenzie Calhoun is on K-7, but the Borg didn't eviscerate half the Alpha Quadrant, etc.).

Hoo boy! You lit the fuse with this week's question, didn't you? >:)
As for my opinions, I think lockboxes are a fun, if somewhat dangerously slippery, part of the game. I'm quite sure the key sales they generate account for a solid part of Cryptics game income, so who could begrudge that? It funds the game moving forward, which is always good. As long as you approach the boxes with the right mentality, like buying a lottery ticket with a few spare dollars just for fun, you'll enjoy yourself and might get a lucky surprise. If you try to treat lockboxes as purely a pay to win gateway, you will very quickly find yourself slipping into a massive spending habit. I certainly know I've caught myself on the urge to buy keys just because I was bored with gameplay for a week or two. Like any gambling outlet, it just requires self moderation.

I wouldn't really say the contents of the boxes have gotten much more or less exciting over time. The basics have remained the same. You might get a fairly OP ship. You might get some good Doffs or equipment. Or you might get fluff that you'll as soon discard. And, if you're patient, you'll sit on a pile of enough Lobi to treat yourself to a top end ship.

The other thing that must be said in a discussion about lockboxes is how fantastically Cryptic nailed it when they dropped the Infinity Lockbox. That development revitalized the entire landscape for older boxes, while also driving down most of the Exchange prices for high demand items from those older boxes. That was brilliant.
