The game lacks an official chat channel outside the game so fire up your favourite chat software and join #sto on QuakeNet. It's quite empty at the moment and I'm not going to hold your hand there. Just providing a place to chat with people outside the game chat. Cryptic actually ran an IRC channel long ago but abandoned it. I don't know why.

EDIT: Bah, put in The Academy by mistake. Any moderator who can move this to Ten Forward please?

Tip your you, keep making posts in others' thread like you did, just say anything, and rack up your post count until you can make your own threads to ask your questions.

there used to be a thread in here specifically for people to ask questions when they were in that "you can only reply not make your own thread" forum probation phase.

maybe we need a new one.

or we could necro the old one.
