Infinity lockbox

szimszim Member Posts: 2,503 Arc User
Finally, they came up with something to replace the end-of-lifecycle-all-lockbox-drop-event. The infinty lockbox is an all-in-one lockbox that lets you chose the ultra-rare ship, the grand prize, the T5 ship, the trait, the console, the weapon type and the BOFF manual you want. It will help getting prices of many items down to a more reasonable level. But it will also make opening lockboxes in between such special events very unattractive.

None of the old lockboxes will be available in game anymore. Instead, the infinity lockbox prize table is gonna be updated with every new lockbox they release.

So what do you think? Good or bad idea?

    Good idea.

I hate lockbox spam, so anything that saves them clogging up my inventory and making it harder to delete them all, is a bonus!

Overall I'd say it's a good idea, but I also think it'll make the less popular options much more difficult to find if you want them. Allowing the choice packs to be traded would be perfect imho ... which is basically what people will do anyway, by going into chat and taking bids and letting the winning bid pick the ship, then executing a private trade.

This is going to make some items even more astronomically expensive...

This isn't either sarcastic, or a dig, but how do you figure it will be more expensive for anything? I can only fathom that every rare module will be cheaper, and even those items which are less desirable will be cheaper. (I expect a channel to form up where people can request what pops out of a box after agreeing to a price from someone holding an Infinity reward pack.)

I imagine most people will go with the easier approach of checking the exchange to see what has the highest price, and choosing that, rather than go into a chat channel and take bids from people who want other things. With the resulting reduction in supply, those less popular items will jump in price.

And then subsequent people will choose those items from the packs and sell them dropping the price.... you shot yourself in the leg with your own logic.

That's right. The launcher says Infinity lockboxes are now available.

This is really not a big deal.

The only effective difference is you choose which box to open after rolling the RNG instead of before. It will not "make some items even more astronomically expensive" nor will it "make opening lockboxes in between such special events very unattractive."

But of course it will spare people having to suffer a bazillion different types of boxes cluttering their inventory during the old lockbox event.

I like it a lot. I already have the Tal Shiar and Xindi aquatic ship but can still dig for other contents from those boxes without risking getting a grand prize ship I'd just be selling. It puts me in a position where I can open one box looking for my most wanted ship, trait, and console all with one key.

My expectation on exchange prices is we'll see a normalization within each prize class - cheap ones will come up as the old stock is cleaned out and not replaced, while expensive ones will come down as it becomes easier to acquire them as by-products of your main interest.

I am very happy with the change. Some of the older boxes had so many junk white rewards alongside the good rewards. Now you can simply choose something else that's more desirable than the junk at the same reward level. It should bring older boxes instantly back into parity with the new boxes. Well done to the devs on this one!

I like the idea of an all-in-one box for this event. Before you had every box dropping, and it was random. You never knew which box you got. As we got more boxes, it actually got a bit harder to go for the lockbox you wanted because the loot table had more variables meaning your roll chance was lower for the desired box.

This way... we can do away with that clutter, and make it a bit easier for everyone to zero in on what they want without having to try and remember which box had what.

Also with the Vorgon Escort we might see a bit of a spike in demand for Phased and Destabilizing Tetryon.

You open a box and get a item that is BOUND to character until you select the item you want... what you select is not what I need so... what I need becomes RARE... it becomes SUPER RARE. The price will jump up.

Are the console prize packs in any way changed from the old, the two examples given Plasmonic Leech and Vaadwaur Constriction Anchor work in different ways. Plasmonic Leech was inside another tradeable box that opens to a Plasmonic Leech if you're Fed/allied or Ionized Gas Sensor if you're KDF/allied. However the Anchor just pops out as an unbound console. So, if I open these on a KDF, will I get the option to choose the Leech pack, or is my only option the Ionized Gas Sensor?

Also, what about the faction-triad things like Traits (ex. Reciprocity) and consoles (ex. Metreon Gas Canisters/Repair Platforms / Projected Singularity)?

It sounds like it could lower the EC price of T6 ships on the exchange in the long run, if so then YAY!

I have no idea what it will do to trading and exchange prices, but I know it will remove a lot of clutter.

More importantly perhaps for Cryptic and many future players - it will solve the question how the console players will get their hands on stuff like Plasmonic Leech or prized ships from earlier lockboxes.

    I think it's a good thing overall.

If you want any of the lower priced genetic sequencers for "fun builds" (I think volatile plating and volatile defenses are both grossly undervalued ATM...) you should buy them now, because with the new pick-what-you-want system what you see up is pretty much all there will be from now on... at this moment with key prices selling 1-3 keys will let you scoop up a bunch of stuff that'll fade away entirely over then next few weeks.

If the prices for some items start to rise, people will start to choose them more often to cash them in on the exchange. And the prices will drop again.
Remember the drop chances for unique ship, console etc. will remain the same. You just get to choose, what to claim. nothing more.

Well, you could make an argument that this will flatten exchange prices for all LB items at the highest price of any item in that selection tier. Because nobody's going to waste a selection box on an item that would sell for less.

I bought some keys with my saved up stipends, and (among other things) I got a space trait box. And I can CHOOSE what I want from a list. And that list includes Wing Commander! *squee*

Considering how many of my toons use carriers, I'm not sure who to give it to.

After $30 in keys I've gotten 3 plasmonic leeches and 2 inspirational leadership resequencers. That's a huge surge in effectiveness for my roster.

Plus some entertaining wackiness like a Feringi privateer cadre and a Tholian Doff.

I'd rather they just get rid of the damned lockboxes, and let us buy what we want out right. I'll spend 30-40 dollars on a lockbox ship if I'm guaranteed that ship. I have opened over 120 lockboxes, and the only real worthy ships I have gotten was the Xindi Aquatic dreadnought and the Aeon timeship. The rest was useless junk I wouldn't even use. Either that or get rid of the keys since the chance of getting one of those nice ships is so low, you end up spending $200-$300.
