    Hmmm... so many possible answers...

    I generally don't have a theme with my naming conventions for my ships... On my main Fed Sci, I did try for a theme, being ice/clod, as he is an Aenar... but that has fallen by the wayside.

    Now I generally draw the vessels name from how it is built or visual aesthetic. So, I have vessels such as:
    Nosferatu, a NX class Experimental Science Vessel, built with Dyson tech centering around polaron weapon systems.
    Or
    Ganapati, my Annorax... I found that its form is very reminiscent of Hindu ceremonial implements, so I chose it's name from the Hindu god, Ganesha.

    Now, I just need to find a ship for polaron cannon build... "Purple Rain"

    My ship name is

    USS Lexington NCC (Should be CVN) ....Idk wth the number is tbh lol

    Jupiter Class Carrier and really wish i could give it a CVN designation SINCE its a carrier, and i think if the federation was real carriers would have a CVN designation or a variant of that carrier prefix.

    Gotta remember that while Gene did pull a lot of naval referencing into Trek (the rank system for one), he didn't want Trek to be all "overtly militaristic", Starfleet was supposed to be more... para-military than actual standing military in a lot of his viewpoints, IIRC.

    Therefore, given the chance to... import... a naval "hull classification code" system into Starfleet, he decided he wanted something... a little less "military, especially naval comparison". Whether grounded in actual naval tradition or made up, NCC=Naval Construction Contract, which is how Gene "elected" to number "his" ships.

    Hence why we don't have CVN. Or CA, CC, CL, DD, DE, FF, DN, SS (whether "submarine" or "StarShip"), etc.

    Still, CVN = "Carrier Vessel, Nuclear". Thusly, Starfleet might have gone back to plain CV if they did adopt this sytem, cause otherwise you'd have the possibility of "weird" combinations like CVW (Carrier Vessel, Warp) or CVMAM and CVF/CVI (to denote ion/impulse vs fusion powered carriers).
    Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

    To rob a line: [quote: Mariemaia Kushrenada] Forum Posting is much like an endless waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever. However, opinions will change upon the reading of my post.[/quote]

    Most of my ships are named after British battleships - such as Repulse, Resolute, Renown, Resolution, Royal Sovereign - as they tend to 'fit' the the Federation ships that I fly (cruisers, for the most part). Other names are similar in character - Apocalypse, Broadsword, Dauntless, Endeavour, Infefatiguable, and Majestic. My intel ships (which I also play a lot) are generally named as a V series, such as Victory, Vengeance, Viceroy, Vigilance and Valiant.

    My TOS Enterprise for new chars is always called the U.S.S. Lexington, after the ship of the same name that was destroyed in The Ultimate Computer (TOS), and my Advanced Heavy Cruiser (T3) or Retrofit (T5U) are called U.S.S. Melbourne, after the ship lost at the Battle of Wolf 359.

    My delta flyer (active shuttle) is usually named something forward-leaning like H.M.S. Vanguard, but sometimes something more exploratory (Magellan).

    Not everything is so serious though. I have Ferengi Nandi Warships called S.S. Break Even, H.M.S. Bounty, H.M.S. Profit, and H.M.S. Revenue, and a pilot escort named U.S.S. Speed is Life.

    Klingon ships tend to be named as various incarnations of Kuvah'magh, Orion ships tend to be some variation of Buccaneer, and Romulan ships tend to be some variation of Serenity, Hope (fed) or Unseen, Shadows (kdf).
    My KDF Engineer is currently flying a DSD named "Honey Badger V", the latest in a series of that name, just because, well, honey badger don't give a damn!

    Oh I remember seeing that name!! I either just laughed out loud when I saw it, and thought it awesome, or perhaps I PMed you to that effect. Well played sir/ma'am.

    @baddmoonrizin Nice shot of the Odyssey. Still the prettiest ship of Starfleet, fitting for a flagship. Also did you make that plaque yourself or from a site?

    Thanks. I made it myself. :)

    For me, it's dependant on the character. My main (a Human Fed Engineer) uses a number of ship names from the Royal Navy (a few exceptions) -

    U.S.S. Eagle (Fleet Jupiter Carrier, namesake from the RN ship of the same name);

    U.S.S. Courageous (Olaen Heavy Escort, a RN carrier of the same name);

    U.S.S. Retribution (originally Thunderchild-class, now an Alita HEC - (NCC-93642-C) the registry has remained somewhat-consistent over the few years that I've played the game. Currently the ship with the most number of alternate forms - Thunderchild>Defiant>Sao Paulo>Defiant-R>Alita);

    U.S.S. Montana (Fleet Andromeda, from the cancelled USN battleship class of the same name);

    U.S.S. Venator (Yamato/Galaxy Dreadnought, from the Latin word for 'hunter');

    U.S.S. Sentinel (Arbiter/Avenger Battlecruiser, the registry (NCC-98076-B) is probably among the last ones that I typed out myself);

    U.S.S. Thunderer (named for the WWI battleship, registry number NCC-92774-B);

    U.S.S. Nimoy (a tribute to the late Leonard Nimoy - Eclipse Intel Battlecruiser);

    U.S.S. Badger (Guardian Cruiser - randomly generated name, decided to keep it because why not?);

    U.S.S. Sakaira (originally Excelsior-R, combination name of Sakura and something else, had it long enough to forget and not care ^^);

    Essex, Al'adraan'a, Themistocles (Samsar, Sarr Theln, Krenim Science Vessel - I think the Samsar came with that name, and I kept it; I changed the carrier to give it more of a Breen name, but I may have been wrong there; I may have made a mistake with the KSV);

    U.S.Ss. Riviera, Magellan, Osorio (Endeavour-, Yorktown-, Sojourner-class ships - I believe they were all RG names);

    U.S.S. Audax (a Latin word relating to 'valiant' - T6 Tac Escort);

    Valparaiso (I think it's a place in California - Elachi Escort (T5-U)).

    My Ferengi alt's D'Kora is called the Hostile Takeover and his Nandi is the Corporate Raider (searching business terms was fun)

    I've never paid any attention to the ship numbers, other than having the right number of digits for the future ships. I put the most work into my temporal ships as I use them the most and love all the time travel stuff the most.

    Mobius Temporal Destroyer: USS Tindalos - named after a creature incorporated into H. P. Lovecraft's mythos, a monster that can track and hunt their victims across time.

    Annorax Science Dreadnought: USS Lachesis - second of the three fates in greek mythology, the one who measured each person's life thread to calculate their alloted time in the world

    Temporal Dreadnought: USS Atropos - the third of the three fates, the "cutter of the thread of life" who would determine how each person would die.

    T6 Carrier: USS Hercules - named after mythical hero who was tough and carried lots of things. Nothing too fancy for this one.

    T6 Heavy Escort Carrier: USS Phalanx - carried the name from the T5, seems to fit when using the torpedo console and torp spread at the same time.

    Pilot Escort: USS Vigilant - carried the name and tried to keep track of the revisions of my first escort ship back in the day, wanted something that sounded like Defiant but a bit different.

    Before you could reclaim ships I had a Dyson Science ship called the USS Stapledon, named after the 1930s sci-fi author who came up with the concept of a dyson sphere before Dyson did.

    I've never paid too much attention to the registry.

    My Fed engineer (Antonine) started naming ships after Earth nautical battles - because Starfleet is obsessed with Terran nautical tradition and it amuses her, though usually with a thought to the class.

    The Prometheus got named the Salamis after the battle that shaped what ended up dominating the Mediterranean for centuries - a good choice for a Borg-hunter. The Guardian-class got named after Trafalgar a battle where resolution carried the day against (on-paper) superior odds.

    Her Yamato is the Nagato - after a less famous but still pretty spectacular battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy. (Or possibly the ancient province the battleship was named after, she wasn't quite sure for battleships which Starfleet was considering, since large regions is also Terran-traditional)

    The older Star Cruiser Constellation wasn't in the convention, but she wasn't quite as high-ranked, and Constellation is silly.

    I name my Nebulas on the way up after various nebulae as well, and have a science officer in an intelligence sci-ship (the Scryer) called the Delphi

    KDF ships use the sort of naming convention of 'evil' that Starfleet Battles liked to use for its D7 cruisers (Doomslayer, Destruction, etc)

    Romulan ships are usually named after birds of various sources, and sometimes elementals (Spirit of Fire, etc)
    Fate - protects fools, small children, and ships named Enterprise Will Riker

    On my main Sci Fed I call all the ships Permaculture (A, B, C, etc) which is a form of gardening. When I'm not in game that is one of my other hobbies.
    My Ferengi D'Kora is called Atlas Shrugged after a very excellent book.
    My first KDF ship is called the Sov Nej which translates "to seek knowledge" which was what I was doing/(and continue to do) when I started that alt in this game.

    I forgot to mention this in my last post: When my Romulan toon flew a Ferengi Nandi for a little while to get the trait, I named her the Filthy Lucre. I'll probably use that name again if I ever feel like getting the trait for another toon. It's a nice trait if I ever flew ships that could fit Tachyon Beam more often. For some reason, most of my toons wind up in ships with only lieutenant sci seats and I need Hazard Emitters and Sci Team.

    I don't remember what I named that toon's Breen Dreadnought Cruiser while getting that trait, but her Krenim Science Vessel is the G'Kar to commemorate the fact that that character shares an actor with Commander Tomalak from that one TNG episode. I thought Katsulas played Commander Jarok's father, but it looks like he played the guy chasing him. Oh well.

    I named all my characters after Tibetan Buddhist meditation figures, and all their ships according to themes associated with them. I left the registration numbers random, due to my fondness of random number generators as a statistician ;).

    Tara -> Fearless, Swift, Mirth, Peace, Power, Faith, Wish
    Yamantaka -> Pervader, Arise, Exalted, Wind, Fire Blaze
    Vajrasattva -> Eradicator (also as a nod to the corresponding Kids in the Hall episode), Purify, Prostrate, Mantra, Resolve
    Hayagriva -> Equine, Gaze, Wisdom, Mala
    Manjushri -> Stainless, Diamond, Aggregate, Phenomena
    Dzambhala -> Wealth, Harvest, Token

    Currently I'm flying the USS Hawking NCC 91701-H It's a Mobius Temporal Destroyer named for Professor Stephen Hawking.

    All of my ships, regardless of name, use the 91701-<insert letter here> registry system. I know that isn't how it works in canon but it works for me. Why 91701? If you have to ask that, frankly this game is not for you.

    Some examples of my ship names:

    - USS Albion NCC 91701 (Miranda Class, named for my favourite football team Brighton & Hove Albion)
    - USS Intrepid NCC 91701-A (Constitution Class, named for the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier in New York)
    - USS Gallifrey NCC 19701-B (Excelsior Class, named for the the home planet of the Doctor in Doctor Who)
    - USS Seagull NCC 91701-C (Ambassador Class, named for the nickname of the aforementioned football team)
    - USS Tribble NCC 91701-D (Galaxy Class, named for...well, tribbles)
    - USS Dragonstone NCC 91701-E (Sovereign Class, named for Stannis Baratheon's island fortress in Game of Thrones)
    - USS Goldstone NCC 91701-F (Odyssey Class, named for the former stadium of the aforementioned football team)
    - USS Knightmare NCC 91701-G (Gal-X Class, named for an 80's/90's kids TV show in the UK)
    - USS Stargazer NCC 91701-I (Constellation Class, no further explanation required)
    - USS Vulcan NCC 91701-J (Presidio Class, named for the RAF's Avro Vulcan bomber)
    - USS Blackbird NCC 91701-K (Aeon Timeship, named for the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird)
    - USS Manhattan NCC 91701-L (Delta Flyer, named for my favourite holiday destination)
    - USS Victor NCC 91701-M (Guardian Class, named for the RAF's Handley Page Victor bomber)
    - USS Feynman NCC 91701-N (Paradox Class, named for physicist Richard Feynman)
    - USS Tim Peake NCC 91701-O (Vesta Class, named for British astronaut Tim Peake)
    - USS Turing NCC 91701-P (Manticore Class, named for computing pioneer Alan Turing)

    I have already determined that when (I refuse to see it as an 'if') we get a T6 Sovereign, mine will be named the USS Valiant in order to complete my V-Force set of British Cold War bombers with the USS Vulcan and USS Victor.

    The observant among you may also notice a pattern among the ships lettered A-F. ;)

    Here we go, my currently run main ships of my characters:

    Starfleet:

    Tac: USS Eatos, Fleet Guardian Cruiser. This is a reference to my favorite TCG. Eatos is a member of the "Guardian" archetype. Registry is random.

    Engineer: USS Genf, Geneva class Command Battlecruiser. Genf is the German spelling of Geneva. Random registry.

    Science: USS Murasaki, Fleet Long Range Science Vessel T6. Named after the Murasaki 312 Quasar. Registry NCC-312001-A.

    KDF:

    Tac: IKS K'nera, Fleet Mogh Battlecruiser T5. Named after the Captain of the K't'inga cruiser "T'Acog" which encountered the Enterprise in "Heart of Glory".

    Engineer: IKS Kharn, Fleet K't'inga cruiser Retrofit. Named after the Klingon warlord in Star Trek Axanar.

    Romulan:

    Tac: RRW Generix, Fleet Arkif Warbird T6. Named after a Romulan ship in the Armada II mod "Fleet Operations". Ship style is Reman however.

    Engineer: RRW Deletham, Fleet Ha'apax Warbird T6. I chose the name since is supposedly translates to "defender". It seemed to fit the story for Romulan characters and I always felt the Ha'apax was under-represented with all the Scimitars around. Romulan visuals.

    USS Warspite. Named after the grand old lady of the Royal Navy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Warspite_(03))
    NCC-91905. The 1905 being a number I personally attach sentimental value to. The first "9" because it has to start with a 9.

    Not all of my characters have themes, but the ones that do....
    Fleet Admiral Zombee commands the Nandi called the Strongbow. All ships he has commanded have been family names that I have found within my own family tree.
    Sisteric, up till is current ship, was always named after a weapon written in Klingon.
    Danic's ships have been variation on the named of Discovery. Things like Seeker, Oracle and the current ship the Scryer.
    Zemo have been randomized names, but I have made sure that they start with the letter after the last ship. Currently using the Ludelvius.

    Rest of my guys are all random. Just because I don't have much time for this.
    Federation: Fleet Admiral Zombee (Alien Tactical)::Fleet Admiral Danic (Vulcan Science)::Fleet Admiral Daniel Kochheiser (Human Engineer)
    KDF: Dahar Master Kan (Borg Klingon Tactical)::Dahar Master Torc (Alien Science)::Dahar Master Sisteric (Gorn Engineer)
    RR-Fed: Citizen Sirroc (Romulan Science)::Fleet Admiral Grell (Alien Engineer)
    RR-KDF: Fleet Admiral Zemo (Reman Tactical)::Fleet Admiral Xinatek (Reman Science)::Fleet Admiral Bel (Alien Engineer)
    TOS-Fed: Fleet Admiral Katem (Andorian Tactical)::Lieutenant Commander Straad (Vulcan Engineer)
    Dom-Fed: Dan'Tar (Jem'Hadar Science)
    Dom-KDF: Kamtana'Solan (Jem'Hadar Science)

    I generally do not follow any specific naming convention for my various. My Fed captains have ship names with words in the English language. My KDF captains have ships using Klingon words. However, for one of my Romulan captain instead of using Romulan words, I use Latin words. Specifically, I name them after a family of / specific birds of prey.

    An example would be Pandionidae which is a family of birds that includes the osprey. Just for fun I named the current ship for that captain the Falconidae Alumen which translates to Aluminum Falcon.

    Only one ship on one of my characters really has a background worth recounting.

    USS V'nashir NCC-93412-B

    Named after a character belonging to my ex-girlfriend, Azrae V'nashir. We were still together when I started playing the game in 2010, and when my main got to level cap I needed a name for his Prometheus-class escort. The character of Azrae was a sexy redheaded firecracker with a touch of melancholy and a penchant for blowing things up with a lot of fire, so it seemed like a good fit for an Escort.

    The registry number is the character's birth year. Since the character was for an Elder Scrolls roleplay, I took the era and year - 3e 412 - and added the 9 at beginning to satisfy STO's requirements.

    The name stuck. V'nashir is a pretty distinctive name both visually and sounding, and it just seems to suit the Prometheus. So far it's graced the stock T5, the MVAE, the Fleet MVAE, the Hestia, and now serves as the name of my Fleet Hestia, gaining the -A suffix when the MVAE came out and finally going up to -B when the Hestia dropped.

    The breakup was somewhat smooth and we're still friends so I was never presented with an emotional reason to change it.

    My ship's registry-number has no real meaning.

    The name, however, "USS Aleksey Krupnyk" is a homage to a friend and StarCraft 2 player, who's always shown innovative/unorthodox strategies and exceptional manners, being inspiration for me. Since the ships are often named after famous personalities, scientists, etc.. why just not pick something relevant to me, personally, right? :smiley:

    My ships name depend on the mood of the moment and what I think of the ship. My delta toon is the exception I decided not to bother with finding names so every ship is name RRW Whatever xx where xx is the number I'm up to at the moment I put the ship into service.

    My ships started with a theme of "home":
    Centaur Class: USS Biloxi (closest city to my home town), NCC-91838 (9+year of Biloxi's incorporation)
    Type 8 Shuttle: USS Hancock (home county); NCC-91841 (9+year of county's formation)
    Yellowstone Runabout (replaced shuttle): USS Hancock; NCC-91841-A
    Excalibur Class: USS Mississippi (home state), NCC-91817 (9+year of MS statehood)
    Cheyenne Class: USS Republic (reference to USA), NCC-91776 (9+Signing of the Declaration of Independence)
    Galaxy Class: USS Citizen (street I grew up on), NCC-90318 (9+number of house I lived in)
    Sovereign Class (refitted to Regent): USS Gawain (my gamertag: Gawain_VIII), NCC-91980 (9+my birth year)

    I have other ships... giveaways, bought for use in Admiralty, etc., but I never Captained them in-game. They're named & registered after ships from the Star Fleet Technical Manual like the Ptolemy and Saladin and Keppler for the LRSV, Gladius escort, and Advanced Research Vessel, respectively.

    My KDF officer's ships were all named with the "Sword" theme: Gladius, Dirk (technically, a dagger, but this is my shuttle), Falchion, Khopesh, Xiphos... except my endgame, which is the I.K.S. Ga'Wain.

    My Fed-Rom, I was uninspired and simply used the class name... until endgame, the R.R.W. Gwalchmai (Welsh form of Gawain)

    My KDF-Rommie is a Star Empire loyalist. His ships were all named for historical Roman military titles: Pilum, Hastii, Dux, Princeps, Consul, and currently, the I.R.W. Imperator.

    Just to name a few of my ship themes:

    One done for my wife is a variation on her name, Captain Naomi Grimm, with the Presidio class USS Aries which is her astrological sign, and the registry is our anniversary...

    One is done for me with a variation on my name, Captain Robert Stevensson, who flies a Vesta class USS Valkyrie, and the registry is my birthday...

    Another is more clever for those who might recognize... Captain Simon LeBon who flies the USS Arcadia, with crew members named Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, and an Android named Duran2. It's registry is NCC-91981...

    I have others, but they are all named as extensions of the original ships of the line. For instance, I have a caitian who flies the Odyssey class USS Intrepid, with registry NCC-98408. The old Franz Joseph book lists the Constitution Class USS Intrepid as NCC-1708, and the new Yorktown ship was given registry of NCC-98400... So I just extended it...

    I try to be clever with most of them...

    Lots of fun ones, and some very significant ones listed here...

    I only "name" my latest ships. For instance, I have called all my main character's ships (cruisers) USS Harry Flashman, transferring the name as I get better ships. He was the bully in Tom Brown's Schooldays and the anti-hero in the funniest books ever written.

    My Escort is called the USS Stormbringer after the hellsword used by Elric in the books by Michael Moorcock.

    My Kremin T6 is called RRW Biffa Bacon. A character from an humorous adult comic in the UK.

    Well, my main Federation ship, an Alita-class Heavy Escort Carrier (T6), is named the U.S.S. Curtana.
    Its named after the sword of Holger Danske (English: Ogier the Dane).
    Curtana is said to be made by "the same steel and temper as Joyeuse and Durendal.", which are the swords of Charlemagne and paladin Roland. Holger Danske is said to have inherited the sword of the Arthurian knight Tristan.
    There is a statue of Holger Danske at Kronborg castle, which legend has it will come alive if Denmark is ever in need of his protections.
    I just love the statue, the stories, and the name. So much I wanted to use the swords name for a ship.

    My main KDF ship is a Fleet Mat'Ha Raptor (T6), named the I.K.S. Kitumba.
    Named after a planned episode for Phase II of The Original Series. Which was gonna show the klingon homeworld in a very diffrent way from we know it today.
    I always liked alternate planned stories and concepts for series I enjoy. Seeing how things could have turned out.
    And the name really struck me as something that could be fun to use to see if anyone got the ref, so I used the name when this game went live, and stuck with it since.

    Also the Star Trek fan series Star Trek: Phase II (also known as Star Trek: New Voyages), have since made thier own version of Kitumba, which is an adapted version of the original planned story, made to fit in with current Star Trek Lore.

    Its really worth a watch, I enjoyed this episode greatly. Lots of old Klingon ships, Qo'nos landscape and architecture... It also shows a good mixture of ridged and smooth headed Klingons.
    "Please, Captain, not in front of the Klingons."
    Spock to Kirk, as Kirk is about to hug him.
