Complete beginner stuck in first scene

I would like to play more but have not managed to get anywhere in the first scene on USS Kitimer.
The only hint I got was from one npc telling me to use a control panel in the next corridor.
I went to all control panels I could find and clicked on them (didn't know what else to do).
Running around trying to find something that responds is making this a sad start for me.
