How Many Boxes Does It Take?

lordatrocitieslordatrocities Member Posts: 454 Arc User
I am just wondering as I have now opened 25 R&D boxes and have not mangaed to obtain the new Jem ship. They say you get lobi, but in 25 boxes I have only earned 26 lobi. This doens't sound right given the information stated on the news release.

Is the damn thing borken? Or do I just need to buy another 25 R&D boxes to and try again? What then? Another 25?

Sorry, but I think this is a scam of epic proportions. Each box costs $3.00 (or 300 zen) and while you can spend $10.00 for 4 boxes, you still get the shaft because as I have said, I am up to 25 boxes now and have nothing to show for it but depleted Zen. (I had the zen and figured why the hell not.)

Now I am out of zen and don't want to buy any more so there I am. I do believe I have been scammed.

Shame of you Crypitic for getting my hopes up with false odds and fusssy math.

Its something like a 1% chance per box. You could get it on your next box, or you could open another thousand boxes and not get it. Its just chance.

It's based on a random number generator model.

You can open 1 box and get 1 ship.

You can open 1000 boxes and get 1000 ships.

You can open 10000000 boxes and get no ship.

Every box you open has the same random chance. It makes no difference how many boxes you actually open. The number of boxes you open has absolutely no bearing on the likelihood that the next box you open will give you a ship.

    In conclusion, it's random.

Probably around ~200 on average ... but maybe 2000 if you're unlucky ... or 2000000000 if you're very unlucky ...

    -> in other words : pure chance ... aka "Lottery : A **** man's tax"

Well if the amount of Lobi you've gotten is correct that certainly seems like an error, it should be 10 per box like previous promotions.

As for the ship itself players have previously figured that the chances of getting a ship from a promo box was about 2%. That's 2% per box. Opening 25 boxes gave you 25 chances at 2% each to get the ship. You could open 1,000 boxes and not get a ship or you could get one on the next box opened.

25 boxes should have given you 250 Lobi. Mine gave me 10 lobi a piece - if you didn't get 10 lobi per box, it's a bug and you should report it.

    Now, as to the substance:

First of all, don't spend 300 Z on boxes, spend 250 Z by buying the four pack.

And it's not a "scam" - Cryptic tells you that there is a chance. They don't tell you the chances (though it's about 1%), but given the power you can rest assure it is a low chance. And yet...

...You still received 25 R&D Boxes with expensive things in them like VR materials, VR components, Blue Catalysts and Accelerators, etc. If you're not interested in those, sell them on the exchange, and use the resulting EC to buy a Strike Ship. It's not as cool as pulling one from the boxes, but it is reliable.

You also got 250 Lobi, which you should be able to use to buy tradable items to sell on the exchange to get more EC.

Cryptic hasn't scammed you by offering a chance to get a new T6 ship through a limited-time promotion.

Well technically it's a scam if you're buying this R&D boxes expecting to get anything other then 10 Lobi. They haven't published the chances of getting the ship, so they are swindling people thinking they'll get this ship.

    Here is the math formula:

(credit limit on credit card)/zen = X (then add one more box then what you purchased)

The thread title is "How many boxes does it take" - I've answered that.

The probability is never published. People sometimes state their best guess in various threads but no player actually KNOWS it for sure.

Cryptic has not demonstrated any dishonest intent. Cryptic wants people to spend money so there's a low chance, but it's not as if Cryptic advertises it as "50-50 Lobi/Ship". It's a fine line between what Cryptic's doing and an actual scam; but Cryptic has not actually promised anything beyond either a ship OR lobi.

    It's the definition of insanity.

Keep opening the same R&D packs expecting a different result / JHSS.

Perhaps you meant one more than you'll ever buy?
    (which would be Zero)

If you buy the pack for a ship, you're an idiot

Buy it because you genuinely want the R&D materials, and if you win a ship... that's just a huge bonus

I can tell you that I have confirmed, at least for the boxes I have opned, now 28 total, (6000 zen) that they only award 1 lobi, not 10, but 1 per box. I have submitted a bug report.

    Nope , I meant what I said .

The offering of this ship has lead me to a frighteningly cold place (as opposed to the fiery / angry place from where my usual posts come from) .

Thus instead of answering "how many boxes does it take to get a ship ?" , I choose to answer "how many boxes does it take to get past this suckers game ?" .

Because selling me the C-Store ships again was one thing .
Selling me the Lockbox ships again is quite another .

And I will not play this game .
This is not worth my effort , or my money or my ingame assets .

    ... it's worth nothing ... , because T7 , T8 and T9 may be just around the corner ...

Open 10x more, and you "might" get one.
I needed approx 80 (Rom packs) to get the original jhas, but people said i was lucky to get one out of my 80 or so tries.
Many have told me they needed to open 150+ to get their ship.
    No different here I'd imagine.
But as per usual, the chat will be filled with people who claim they got one on a 4 pack...oh and their fleetmate buddy also got one on a four pack to boot.
^while I don't doubt "some" have gotten one on a four pack. Its highly unlikely.
Don't let the swag trolls get your hopes up (you'll be sorely disapointed).

You'll need ec and lots of it. Its the only sure way (And usually the cheapest way) to get the ship you want.

It does really grind my gears tho, how cryptic sells ships this way. Hell If they wanted they could easily sell it for 10000zen or even 20000zen straight up. But no, they really want to milk the whales.

But no changing that, the laws arent yet strict enough to prevent pwe (or other online games) from using these types of selling tactics.
They just say, you're buying the pack for Lobi, or mats, and "you get a chance" at the prize ship.
But we all know why everyone plays, its for the ship.
Its just a convient technicality for them. And enables them to milk the customer. Without out getting hasseled by all the online casino/gaming laws.
Not much can be done about it. Its legit.
    *Sry rant over*

I'm passing on the jhss, No thanks. Not this time.
Lesson learned. I won't support it.

Edit: Hope you get your Lobi, that's awful. What if you didn't realize... Just wow.

I am not really sure, but in Germany lottery and gambling machines have to tell you the probabilities for you to win. Any lawers there? Any chance you can mak Cryptic reveal the winning chance? I mean this game is mostly played by Americans and America is the land of lawer or not? ;)

Don't think they are subject to casino/online gaming laws.
Because as I said, they make the lobi the prize, you get what you paid for.. you only have "a chance" at getting the ship.
    Its legit.

Well, after opening about 450 packs (on the tribble server, on a character duplicated 30 times, of course, I'm not insane), I finally got one. That means I would have gotten it for only 112 packs of 4, meaning 112,000 Zen.

I think while merely my own experience, it says a lot.

umm each box comes with 10 lobi...

these are the new R&D boxes from the store only... old R&D Boxes are just R&D boxes.

so if your buying off exchange... be careful and buy the right version.

Again, you are not buying a lottery ticket. You are buying R&D materials. There just happens to be a promotion running, in which you also get a bonus of 10 Lobi (or not, if it's bugged) OR a JHSS.

There is no gambling. Just a simple purchase. You should no more expect to win a JHSS than you should expect to win any other promotional contest a Company may be running.

R&D Event Weekend runs that time.

25% Bonus to R&D materials you get from the boxes...

I know that is not the topic of this thread, but can anyone tell me why the owners of the old Jem'Hadar ships are so upset about the new T6 ship? I started playing the game again 2 month ago after 1 1/2 years of not playing, was there any promise Cryptic made when the old ships came out?
