The ONLY way to fly a beam boat!

pweistheworstpweistheworst Member Posts: 986 Arc User
I just finished a round of PVP in one of my beam boats and I have to say that sometimes I forget how awesome the DOff "Marion Frances Delmur" is when you're in a beam boat.

For those players who have been living in a cave or just not paying attention to the forums over the last few years, Marion Frances Delmur is a Systems Engineer DOff with an amazing ability:

"Greatly reduces Weapon Subsystem Energy Drain for 8sec when Directed Energy Modulation is activated. (+200 resistance to Weapon Subsystem Energy Drain for 8sec.)"

This means if you have Marion and an engineering BOff with Directed Energy Modulation on your ship then you can frequently fire beam overload and FAW with almost no drain on your energy weapons and increased shield penetration!

Translation: FREE DPS!!!!

In a cruiser with decent tanking build, you can survive in a firefight and do MUCH more damage over the length of the battle thanks to Marion and directed energy modulation.

I just checked the prices on the exchange and he isn't cheap, but I'm going to pick up a few more copies of him for my other toons.
In the immortal words of Captain Sisko: "It may not be what you believe, but that doesn't make it wrong."

Don't believe the lies in this forum. I am NOT an ARC user. I play STO on Steam or not at all.

You can maintain 135+ power with faw without it. Of course, it's still nice to have. As for "much more dmg over length of battle," you need it for bo, which is only relevant in pvp, and will drop your dps in pve.

Meh. I'm still getting a Marion eventually because "oh hell yeah". Yet, I think the title is hyperboly.

I got one and wasn't really impressed with it, but then again as impressive as Aux2Batt builds can be I simply generally don't like them

Personally, I don't actually use it for a2b beamboats. Once you can sustain 135 power anyway, what's the point. Between a2b, eptw, plasma intergrated core, plasmonic leech w/flow cap, kcb 2 piece... etc, you should be there already.:P

I do use it for my pvp escort for single beam BO. But that's something else.

The way BO works in pvp is preloading it, pop alpha, tf, eptw, gdf, omega... & company, dem when rdy, tractor, fire BO with BO energy weapon officer doff, follow up with a shield penetrating volley of crf from dhcs and possibly a kinetic torp spread. Target pops, no amount of emergency heals, rsp, or any emergency measure will save it.

I think he has a few marion that aren't selling thus trying to drum up some interest.

Marion is a spike doff...not needed at all for beam users due to overcapping and eps transfer shenangins+weapon efficiency cruiser command...you should know that...

I think my assumption is correct
    Chive on and prosper, eh?

Not selling well, eh? This might explain your 2 recent posts regarding the exchange.

Meh niche doff, not really needed, and there are other means to mitigate wp effectively.

Marion works with overcap as well. You can have more weapon power than 135. 135 is the soft cap, so to speak.

The problem with BO is that it has a pause and a power drain. Marion can reduce the power drain for brief periods (DEM has a bit of a down-time, after which Marion isn't helping you), but he can't stop the pause, build-up, fire, linger, then fire normally cycle that is built into using BO. You might get one solid hit but in that time you could have been hitting the target twice with up to 8x beams (cruiser broadside) doing 50% more damage in the same time it took you to fire one beam by itself.

Just saying, it's not so hot unless you're specifically going nuts over BO spikes. Those are a bit unreliable, too, as they can miss completely.

I think Marion was much bigger of a deal before, when you could double stack BOs for a single burst.

Even if the BO miss, doff is still triggered, thus the volley of dhc will still penetrate shield. You should really hit tractor right before, but either way, target's done for.

None of this is relevant in pve. And it's not because of the "pause," which is minimal and insignificant, but rather because BO shares cd with faw. In pve, any time weapons are not running and faw isn't active means losing dps.

Marion is seriosly overestimated and very, very optional since a year or so. With so much power overcapped he simply isnt needed here.
