Romulan alien gen is a useless piece of tribble

Why is it that we can make green lumpy space monsters that look nothing like humans, romulans, or anything of the sort, when at the same time we are lacking the customization range that enabled us to use the alien gen in the fed and kdf to make truly unique and memorable characters, both humanoid and nonhumanoid?

If the point is to make people have characters that blend in with Romulans and Remans, then the alien gen fails completely, because the first options we get are to make onion-headed pickle people.

If the point is to duplicate the Fed and KDF alien gen, then why are we locked into the human/romulan slider ranges?

Is there even a point at all?

    Since when can even the normal alien generator make nonhumanoids? The character creator lets us do almost nothing to anything below the neck besides scaling.
