So what's a pataka?

I've been using a pataka as weapon for about 3 or 4 years, idk exactly. But never thought what a pataka was. So today I googled it. I was expecting to find some kind pole that may had been used as weapon, or decoration. Nay, none of it. Instead I found about a museum called Pataka-something, a Maori house, bollywood models, and a firework's spectacle. My brain couldn't make a connection between all that.

Then I went an online English dictionary and all it said was that it was a house for storage (Maori origin). So I'm totally lost. I concluded that probably a better word for the weapon we venos use (r9 specially), would be "staff".

But still, does anyone have a clue about some object in real life that could resemble a Pataka in PW?

These two terms come closest to the word. I suppose someone meshed them together and the loose translation for "Pataka" would be "Sword Staff" or "Shooting Staff".

Pataka is just a fancy way to call a magic staff and glaive is a wrong name for a fake weapon. The real glaive is a polearm weapon. From Wiki:

The term "glaive" is frequently misapplied in modern fantasy fiction, films and video games to various thrown weapons, similar to the chakram or hunga munga, which can mystically return to the thrower (as in popular myths surrounding the boomerang). These objects are fictional, and are not in any way related to the historical glaive.

It's just bad translation in my opinion. XD

The Glaive as depicted in PWI looks more like a Wind and Fire wheel.

That's very interesting. I didn't suspect about that weapon. b:chuckle

From the same article you linked:

Interestingly, there are many weapons in game that fit the description of a real life glaive. I still wonder where the heck PW got the word pataka. It would had been easier to name them staves, which is a weapon often used by magic classes in fantasy-games.

It's so weird that I've never thought about any of these weapons. I kinda just looked at what they were called and thought "eh, must be something from another country that I do not know about" I feel like if they were to make up their own kind of weapon they would atleast make some lore about it in a book or questline though. Then again who actually reads the quest texts

I was pretty sure it was inspired by an Indian fakir's crutch, that could be used both as a walking stick and a weapon. No idea how it is originally called though.
P.S. Found also the name "bairagi crutch", but that doesn't sound much like "pataka" either.

Well, if this is so difficult, why don't we try to find the source of the problem! So i tried the pwdatabase and a google translate combo, based on this is a chineese game:
pataka is: 幡杖 means "pennant stick"
and the glaive is : well... maybe the japanese one will better: 法具 means Law fixture, or law tool (chck this translated wiki link: http://translate.google.hu/translate?hl=hu&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fja.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2F仏具)

if i try the japaneese version for the pataka again it will be 錫杖, what means Khakkara, bishops staff. This must be the thing we are looking for!

    That's very convincing MagicSkry, thanks a lot :D !

But yeah, just like Desdi: From where did PW got the word Pataka b:chuckle

At least we finally found the tool, which in Japan was used as a weapon too. Mildly interesting that it has some relation with creatures, and venos are animal tamers.

Mildly interesting that it has some relation with creatures, and venos are animal tamers.

From the MagicSkry's wiki page: "The jingling of the staff's rings is used to warn small sentient beings (i.e. insects) to move from the carrier's path and avoid being accidentally trodden on. In ancient times it was used also to scare away dangerous animals."
Well, quite logical for a pet lover b:chuckle Even though also used as a nuke device, if needed.

So basically it must be a translation thing... In the original Chinese version, it is a pennant stick, and the fb19 Trial pataka kind of looks like one, and the original r8 pataka too (that's probably what my belief about fakir's stick was based on, due to this snake/dragon thingie on the top, and that some low level patakas look like a typical crutch). And most of the patakas, especially high level ones, definitely look like a khakkara staff minus jingling rings, so Japanese version got this name... Now I am curious too, where the PWI's version of the name comes from b:question

Search pataka on the site if the page does not load at the pataka.
It basicly look like a trident...

Also makes me think of the staff priest use in manga to channel energy to fight bad spirits.
