Chests in Tales of Old

I'm wondering if not being able to open the chests after the 1st run is a bug or a feature. It baffles me that the chest multiplier goes up but you can't open them again unless they're a mimic.

Same. Except in our 5 man party, one of use was able to open some of the chest on the 2nd run (yeay it was me) while the other 4 couldn't. It seemed like every consecutive run less chests were clickable and only the mimics could be touched for most of the group.

So multipliers on chests = fewer chests for you apparently...

We only did chests on the first level in most of my groups, anything dropped from levels 2 thru 5 was bound anyway, so no real point in going for them unless you had a real solid group to handle the mimics, but being in party chat helped with that, if everyone can "see" the chest then it's obviously a trapped chest, and we could decide whether to battle the mimic or not. Ultimately though, we ignored the chests after level 1 or 2. Sort of sadly pointless to bother with them.
